I really, really dislike it on principle; Sawyer is suddenly a hugely popular name thanks to LOST. Everyone and their goldfish is being named Sawyer. Here's a Sawyer, there's a Sawyer, and another little Sawyer, Sawyer Sawyer Sawyer Sawyer Sawyer Sawyer....Sawyer.

And well, you get the idea. If you name a girl this, I think it would be flagrantly fangirly.

Oh, I'm not saying you are. Just that it'd be assumed by a lot of people. :)

Agreed.

I dislike it anyway, since Sawyer is such an occupation name to me. It's... a sawyer. It'd be like naming your daughter Blacksmith or Apple-seller, in my mind.

Appleseller. *adds to list* Got it. I'll suggest it as a possible name when my DH gets home.

I'm sorry, but NO. I love it on boys, but it's so strong and masculine. I'd never use it on a girl. Really, really, not my style, I don't like it at all. Sorry.

it definitely sounds masculine to me. i'd never use it as a girls name. it's adorable for a boy, though!

I don't care for it on either sex, but it's definitely all boy to me. ;]

I don't even like it that much on a boy but I hate it on a girl. The name is very masculine and should be used in a boy only, IMO... besides with all the Lost hype right now... (although I very much like the character! ;) )

As boyish a name as David to me...so no. I like it though.

If you like that sound, perhaps you'd also like the Russian name Zoya? It's got quite a similar sound but transcends the occupation name trend which may feel dated going forward.

I believe Zoya is a variant of Zoe, "life". I do have to admit that meaning is quite a bit more attractive to me than the one for Sawyer:

1: one who is employed to saw wood
2: any of several beetles whose larvae bore holes in dead or dying trees especially conifers

Good suggestion. Zoya is kind of cool. and definitely not used often, at least in the US.

Definitely not. I can stand it on a boy, but I can honestly say that I despise it on a girl.

Awful.

My son is a Sawyer and I'm pissed because he was named before we even knew what LOST was, and now there will be five others in his class. *sob*

I personally love it. The first time I really heard it as a name, I heard it as a girl name. A celebrity's daughter, but still... I love it.

I don't like it at all, especially for a girl (sorry). Just that I get strong images linked with names.. and Sawyer sounds like both Sewer, and Soya sauce, mixed together. Leaves a very nasty taste in my mouth

From: [identity profile] sayga.livejournal.com
well, in the US we don't call it Soya, we just call it Soy, so that association would be lost to a lot of people here.

i also don't like it for a girl though.

From: [identity profile] x-lostinyou.livejournal.com
Haha, but Soy and Sewer together actually sound more like Sawyer than Soya and sewer.

I don't watch Lost so I don't have that association.
I wasn't aware that it was getting that popular either.
