How do you feel about the name Guadalupe?

The first time I saw it was on a little boy with Down syndrome and they called him Lupe for short, which sounds like Loopy and I thought it was so mean of his parents to do that to him. I was in 5th grade, though, and didn't realize it was a cultural name and his parents may not have even been English speakers.

On that note, as an adult, I wouldn't blink if I met a Mexican man/boy or woman/girl with the name (I guess it's common for both) but anyone else and it would be out of the proper ethnicity. Unless it's someone from a super-Catholic family.

Not a big fan, but I think Lupe is a pretty nick name. It is something about the "gua" sound that I don't like.

Yes, this is exactly how I feel!

I do not like it at all.

i instantly think "vieja" (old lady). not in a derogatory way, that's just the age range my brain instantly imagines when i hear the name.

Really dislike it.

I'm not familiar with the Spanish/Latino culture so I don't even know the name's meaning, but I found the sound of it really grating.

I see the name constantly in my community. It has a super Hispanic feel to me.

I don't like it.

I like to say it, but I don't actually like the sound of it for a name. I think it's the "Gaud".

Not sure how to pronounce this name but the first think I thought of was cantaloupe...

[identity profile] amyeliz.livejournal.com 2011-02-06 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I do not like it at all.
All I can ever think of is "guacamole" (not because of the origins, but because of the "gua") and "cantaloupe."

Lupe is a personal favourite of mine actually.

It's awesome. Not my style but totally a great name.

Many people associate this name with the Virgin of Guadalupe, which is a really common name in Mexico. It's used for both genders and it's pronounced "Goo-awd-ah-loo-peh." I actually love the name, but I'm biased because it is a family name. :)
