Name rant

I moved back to the town I grew up in a few months back and I was almost releaved to see that people still name children 'normal' aka bland names. Nevertheless all of my friends are still in the big city and those children have crazy names. I guess my rant is the whole connitation that goes with the name.

Recently a girl just named her child "Sebastian". I am sure it was a handsome name before the Little Mermaid came out, but now I just think "singing crab". Before my last miscarriage, my husband and I were discussing names and "Jasmine" popped out. Again, thinking of naming my daughter that reminded me of a middle eastern princess.

Are there any names that you just LOVE but cannot use because of something like a movie character, TV show, etc?

I love and could use both Sebastian and Jasmine. Neither brings up a negative connotation, and adults will not usually be reminded of the Disney movies. That's usually the case for me, but my family is not that into movies--we see them once and then forget about them.

On the other hand, I couldn't use Monica, Chandler, Rachel, Ross, Joey or Phoebe...for obvious reasons. :D

LOL at Friends! (Carrie, Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte might make me feel a little strange too)

I agree with you: I would use Sebastian in a heartbeat, and I might! The Little Mermaid is already so old that I think it's fine.

See, I LOVE SATC and both Caroline (Carrie) and Charlotte are on my list. Miranda is slowly winning me over as well.

I'm a Phoebe, and about 80% of the time when I meet someone new I get something about Friends or Charmed!

I was going to post and say Linus is probably the only one that would give me pause.

I think it's so cool that you used it!

I adore the name Sebastian.
It doesn't make me think of The Little Mermaid.

I mean if you named your child Sebastian the year The Little Mermaid came out, people might make a connection, but c'mon it came out 17 years ago.
I think the statute of limitations has passed!

I'm sure we all remember the movie, so if you're old, then so is everyone else :)

I love Arielle, and I'd use it regardless of Ariel from the Little Mermaid. My bf however says no "Disney Princess" names :( I also liked Jasmine.

I have no problems with Disney names and I actually like the name Sebastian

I think Sebastian and Jasmine are both great names. I haven't seen The Little Mermaid since 1989 and never saw whatever movie is about Jasmine. Disney movies aren't very influential in my life.

I love Linus, but would definitely think twice about that one.

You know what name might be really cool but will for ever more be associated with only one thing? A green frog? Kermit. Poor name, it's never going to be used on a human again. :(

Seeing as how I've been babysitting my best friend's 2.5 year old all summer, I could never use a Disney/Pixar name. I've seen The Little Mermaid, Monsters Inc, and Finding Nemo more times than I ever cared to!

definitely Arielle. and I might even use it bc I love it (and I've heard of girls before & after the Little Mermaid came out with the name) but I don't think my husband would go for it. :(

Felicity, a little bit bc of the show.

With all the talk about The Little Mermaid, and other Disney characters, what do you all think about Aurora and her three fairy godmothers Flora, Fauna and Merryweather?

I don't like Merryweather too much, but could anyone every use the other three?

I adore the name Aurora. When I was single it was the name I had number one on my list for a girl for years. However, boyfriend nixed it way back when we began dating.

I love the name Harry James but as much as I love Harry Potter I really wouldn't want to name my kid after him!

But since my number one girl name is from fiction, I'm not too opposed to most names from media.
