Actress Christina Applegate and fiancé, musician Martyn LeNoble, welcomed daughter Sadie Grace LeNoble on Thursday, Jan. 27.

For some reason i thought Sadie was a nickname I just have no idea what name it would work for. What say you all?

It's a nickname for Sarah because the Normans couldn't pronounce Rs well, so they nicknamed people by changing the Rs to other letters--most commonly L. That's also how we get Hal from Harry, Dolly from Dorothy, Sally from Sarah, and Molly from Mary. I can't think of another D example off the top of my head. Oh wait, Dodie for Dorothy.

The ck nicknames all come from a nickname method used in the Middle Ages where they added -kin onto everything. Most of them only survive as surnames, but some are still used like Jack/John, Hank/Henry, and Rick/Dick/Richard.

How do you know all this? So interesting! Is there a nickname book or something I can read?

There was a website back in the day that had nickname history on it, but it's sadly not up anymore! You might be able to google it and find some stuff, though.
