[identity profile] miss-tee.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
Earlier today I was reading a magazine which had a pic of Mayim Bialik (from the show Blossom).
I asked my boyfriend how do you pronounce Mayim.
"MY-eem" he said.
I said "Wow, I can't decide if I really love that name or if can't stand it cos it's too much."
I've said it to myself so many times that it as lost all meaning.
I think I may be falling in like with it, but I just can't tell yet.

So what do you think of Mayim?

(BTW Mayim means "water" in Hebrew)

Ah, Blossom! (goes back to childhood)

I always read it as may-ihm like it's spelled, and I like *that* pronunciation. Not a fan of MY-eem.

It sounds like a baby bird sound to me - peep, peep. Not necessarily a good thing to me, not sure, lol.

I like MY-eem better too. And I think I like it.

Do we agree on any names Sarah? lol

I don't think I've ever heard a bird sound like that lol (not laughing at you, just the image) :)

I don't like it, it sounds awkward.

In America it would be pronounced more like MY-im. And the MY part is sort of nasal -- it would not rhyme with "try" or "why," it would almost rhyme with the "ay" in "ay carumba."

It's the correct pronunciation, but unless you're an Israeli you're more likely to pronounce it in a Yiddish-y sort of way. Also, even though MY-eem is correct it probably doesn't sound the way you're imagining it does. Here's a link to site with audio:
