Earlier today I was reading a magazine which had a pic of Mayim Bialik (from the show Blossom).
I asked my boyfriend how do you pronounce Mayim.
"MY-eem" he said.
I said "Wow, I can't decide if I really love that name or if can't stand it cos it's too much."
I've said it to myself so many times that it as lost all meaning.
I think I may be falling in like with it, but I just can't tell yet.

So what do you think of Mayim?

(BTW Mayim means "water" in Hebrew)

I always read it as may-ihm like it's spelled, and I like *that* pronunciation. Not a fan of MY-eem.

In America it would be pronounced more like MY-im. And the MY part is sort of nasal -- it would not rhyme with "try" or "why," it would almost rhyme with the "ay" in "ay carumba."

Well good thing I don't live in America...unless you saying that MY-eem is not the correct Hebrew pronuncation.

It's the correct pronunciation, but unless you're an Israeli you're more likely to pronounce it in a Yiddish-y sort of way. Also, even though MY-eem is correct it probably doesn't sound the way you're imagining it does. Here's a link to site with audio:

It was pretty much the way I was pronouncing Mayim.

The first part is like the Mei in Mei Tei kinda and the last is eem but not too stressing on the "ee"s.

I am not Israeli but neither do I come from a Yiddish backround or speak Yiddish. I am a convert to Judaism so the Hebrew I learn to speak is the more Israeli/Sephardi Hebrew.
