Lina/Lena?

There's a student where I work whose name is Lina. I think it's so beautiful but it doesn't sound complete to me. What are some full names that Lina/Lena could be a nickname for? I was thinking of Carolina (prn Care-O-lean-a, not like North/South Carolina) and Catalina, but what other ones might work?

Also my boyfriend and I were walking around the store awhile ago and he overheard a little girl being called by her mom. Her name was Liliana (guessing on the spelling) and he said it was decided, that's what we would call our first girl. I like it, but I'm not sold. Luckily we're not TTC any time soon! What do you think?

I prefer the Lena spelling as a complete name, but Carolina is very pretty! I like the Alina too (I've also seen it spelt Allina), which according to behindthename, is also diminutive of Adelina.

Liliana is nice. I prefer just straight Lillian but I'd be open to using Liliana instead, if I had to.

Well, I like shorter one or two syllable names so Lina/Lena sounds good to me. And Liliana is very pretty and using Lina as a nn for it wouldn't be that much of a stretch if you wanted to.

My great-great-grandmother's name was Helena (heh-LEE-nah) and she went by Lena.

I'm not sure how I feel about Lina, but I love Lena...I love it short for Helena. It could be short for Helena, Alena, Magdalena, Carolina...lots of names! I know that Lina is pronounced like Lena, but to me it looks like it should be Linna...

I think Lina would be a good nickname for Caroline, thus eliminating the state problem. It doesn't have to be exactly in the name.

A family friend's name is Corlina (goes by Corie) and her sister's name is Barbara Ellen (has always gone by Barbie Ellen because her mom is Barb) so when Corie had a daughter, she wanted to combine her sister's name ever so slightly with her own. So her daughter's name is Ellena (pronounced e-leen-a), and they call her Lena.

Personally, I like the Lina spelling much, much, much better. It just looks prettier to me.

And I think Liliana is beautiful.

I love Lena- its on our list, but just as it is.
I'd agree with Helena, Annalena is one I saw on our files at work today also, though I've never heard of it before, it's growing on me.

I like Carolina and Catalina!

I worked with a woman named Magdalena, and I liked that a lot too.

I LOVE Lena, but my husband's family is all from a town called Lena so it could be cheesy if I used it. However, I love Magdalena with the nn Lena, A LOT. I like it as a nn for Helena too.
