A few things:

1. Are there any names that are traditionally one sex that you ONLY like for the other?

- Jordan - I HATE it as a boy's name, but it's one of my favorites for girls
- Casey - I hate it as a boy's name, but I like it as a girl's
- Ashley/Kelly - I hate them as girl's names, but I like them for boys (but I'd never use them, because they've been 'feminine' for so long that a boy would probably be picked on, even though they are both unisex)
- Max - the idea of 'Max' whether as a nn or a full name for a girl just totally weirds me out, but I love it for boys
ETA:
- Brady - I like it as a GIRLS' name, but as a boys'. I knew both a boy and a girl in high school with this name and I thought it fit the girl so much better than the boy.

2. Another thing: are there any names that you hadn't really considered before, but after reading a book or watching a TV show where one of your favorite characters was named that name, you suddenly liked it?

Olivia - It was always one of my favorites, but I never really thought about naming one of my kids this. Then I started watching Law & Order: SVU and I completely fell in love with the main character. My love for the name (which was already immense) grew and now it's my #2 name. Not really AFTER the character, but there are definitely some traits I'd love for my future daughter to have.

Siddalee - I NEVER would have considered this name, but when I read The Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood, I completely fell in love with the character. I still wouldn't use the name, but I do have a soft spot for it. Same with Baylor, Talulah (Lulu), and Shep.

Victoria - I used to hate this name, but not only did I fall for the nn Vix when I read Summer Sisters, but I also fell in love with the idea of this name for a girl. I'd never use it because I hate the name Vicky and that's the one people would use.

Carrie - Sex and the City made me fall in love with it. I also really like the idea of using it in honor of Carrie Chapman Catt, one of the leaders of the suffragist movement. I probably won't use it, but I do love it.

Miranda - I had never thought of using this name before, but again, Sex and the City made me fall in love with it.

Danielle - I used to HATE this name with a passion and I don't even know why. I especially hated the nn Dani for a girl. But then one of my friends used it in a fanfic she wrote and I totally fell in love with it. I don't even know why, but it's very rapidly moved up on my list of names. I think it's now fighting with Jordan, Miranda, and Amelia for my #3 spot.

ETA:
Atticus - I can't believe I forgot this one!!! It's my #2 choice for a middle name (after Michael) and I LOVE it. I never would have considered it until I read To Kill a Mockingbird.

There are more, I know, but those are the ones that really made an impression on me. :)

I like Olivia for the same reason lol.

And this isn't exactly the same, but I love the name Josephine (for a girl) but HATE the name Joseph (for a boy). It's odd, I know.

Like you, Sex & the City made me like the name Miranda. Same goes for Charlotte, though I'm not a huge fan of that one. I actually got my #1 girl's name from a book I read. The name is Esme, and I first heard of it when I was reading Carrie Fisher's novel, Delusions of Grandma.

Well, I really only like Avery for a girl. It's ok for a boy I guess, but I'd never use it.

I really liked the name Ruby after seeing it used as a character on the show Felicity. Up until that point it had seemed such an old lady name to me. But as soon as I could associate it with a young, pretty girl it took on new life. There's probably others but I can't think of them right now..

I don't know how the character on SatC could make you like Miranda. I though she was just such a selfish snarky b****. Ugh, could never stand her scenes. She always made me want to throw things at the tv and shout "be nice!"

Ahh, I love The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya sisterhood, and have found myself loving Siddalee, especially Sidda. That movie also taught me that I'm in love with the name Vivi. But I can't find a great name that Vivi would be a nickname for. I don't love Vivienne because it would be pronounced like "Vivien" which I don't like. And Viviana sounds too Southern, not that there's anything wrong with that, but I'm a Yankee myself. Haha.

I love the name Novalee from Where the Heart Is. When I first read it (I was 12), I thought it was pronounced no-VAH-lee, which I loved. But I also love the actual pronounciation NOVA-lee.

Also, I love the name Coraline from Neil Gaiman's book by the same name.

I like Aaron, Riley, Morgan, Taylor and Ashley for a boy but hate them for a girl. Aaron and Morgan are probaby my favorites out of that list though, the only ones I would consider using anyway.

I don't mind Ashely for a boy though because I know one who's about 23 now, and he's not too bad looking and a super nice guy, so I guess it's just the association.

My likes of the names Taylor and Zachary started with my Hanson fandom back in the day *blushes*

I only like Max for boys, and prefer Casey for girls.

The character thing happens to me ALL THE TIME. Actually, a lot of what have come to be my favorite names were brought to my attention by characters in movies/books/TV.
For instance, not half an hour ago I watched an episode of a favorite TV show & heard the name Leonid. And now I've been thinking about it and I really, really like it, too. O_o

Yeah, I think Samantha would've been my favorite if she just wasn't so over the top all the time. Take it down a notch already.

I didn't really think Charlotte was that uptight. She seemed pretty normal to me. I know what you mean, and occasionally she would have a line that projected she was an uptight priss. But then the next episode she'd be pretending she was 27 and sleeping with random guys at the beach. I guess I notice her more carefree moments because I was partial to her. I thought she was the nicest and most sincere of the four.

Carrie annoyed me because she was always interrupting conversations to bring them back to herself. She was very self-centered. And when she cheated on Aidan, she lost me altogether. Yuck.

Yeah, I don't like Jordan for a boy but I think it's all right for a girl (this mainly comes from watching The Great Gatsby and Crossing Jordan, so it kind of answers your second question, too). I hate Taylor for both guys and girls - does that count?

As for the second part, well, practically all the names I like come from watching tv or reading books! These are ones I wouldn't have previously considered before:

Xander - I think it's a nice variation of a classic name, and it reminds me of Xander from Buffy whom I LOVE.

Donna - When I was in creche (3/4 years old) there was an awful women called Donna who ran it and ruined the name for me, but Donna(tella) from The West Wing has made me love it again.

Cordelia - I first got it from Anne of Green Gables as it's the name Anne always wished was hers, but it was made even better for me because of Cordy from Buffy/Angel. Not a big fan of King Lear but I do like the Shakespearean connotations of the name.

Sebastian - loved it ever since I read the Saddler's Wells books by Lorna Hill, but the fact that my favourite band in the entire world (after The Beatles) is Belle & Sebastian doesn't hurt the name either!
