(no subject)

What do you think of Ashley for a boy? I've always thought of it as a boy's name, as all of the many Ashleys I've met are male, but it seems outside of the UK it's more of a girl's name.

also your thoughts on Ivy, Nadia, Pablo, and Agnes.

Love Ashley for a boy. Looooove.

I like Ivy. and that's it.

I love Ashley on a boy. It makes me think of Gone With the Wind.

I like Ivy. Nadia is alright. Pablo and Agnes are not my favorites.

Yes, Ashley will forever make me think of Ashley Wilkes.

I hate Ashley on a boy because of GWTW. He's my least favorite character.

I don't like Ashley on any gender. But if I HAD to pick one, I prefer it on boys, too.

As for the other names:
Ivy: I like it
Nadia: Good, but not my style
Pablo: I like it
Agnes: Hate it. Looks and sounds so ugly, in my opinion

Ashley it totally a girl's name to me.
I *know* it's technically unisex, but still.

I love Ivy, Nadia and Agnes, but Pablo is a little too spanish for my taste, so if you have spanish heritage, that's fine, otherwise it would be a little weird.

I really disliked Agnes until I met a young one-- she's about 2 years old, and it suits her perfectly. I've warmed to the name, now.

LOVE Nadia.

I guess I'm in the minority here. I think Ashley is a girl's name. It's as feminine as Sarah and Elizabeth to me.

I love Ivy, like Nadia, and really dislike Pablo and Agnes.

this, exactly

My name is Ashley. I'm not very fond of it, but I definitely consider it a girl's name.

I love Ivy. The rest aren't my style.

I like Ashley better for boys than girls, but I don't care for it really, either way.

I adore Agnes.

[identity profile] queen-islanzadi.livejournal.com 2010-12-03 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Here in Australia, Ashley can go either way. Usually it depends on the spelling, i.e Ashley vs Ashleigh, but when you're saying it then spelling makes no difference. Personally I don't have a preference for male or female.

I don't mind Ivy and Nadia, not fond of Agnes, dislike Pablo.

Ashley makes me think of the tV SHOW, CASTLE, the main character's Daughter's boyfriend's name is Ashley.

[identity profile] pegasus2o5.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 03:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! Worth noting that Castle assuming "daughter's friend Ashley" was a girl was sort of a plot point.

Hubby's name is Ashley, so I like it. :)

I know Ashley is a boy name (or I guess unisex name), but I always associate it with girls. I can only think of one boy Ashley, and it's one of the guys from...Otown? I think. Some old boyband.

love Ivy
like Nadia
hate Pablo
Agnes I could never get used to on a young person.. my great-grandma's name was Agnes, and it's etched into my brain as an old people name!

Ashley is one of my favourite names for a boy. I would never use it though since where I live, it is most commonly a girl name.

I love Agnes!

[identity profile] pegasus2o5.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Ashley = 100% girl name in the US. It is technically unisex, and I've even known a male Ashley, but everyone will assume Ashley is a girl every day of his life.

Ash, Asher, and Ashton are boy names, though.

Ivy -- LOVE. Simple, gorgeous, old-fashioned, uncommon. Perfect.
Nadia -- I always feel like this name is a little odd on someone with no Russian ancestry, but it is a lovely name.
Pablo -- eh, I just don't really like the sound of it. And it's the kind of name people call a Hispanic guy when they can't be bothered to remember his real name.
Agnes -- So, so, so ugly. I'm sorry. I have always hated the guts of this name, I can't understand anyone liking a name that starts with AG.

[identity profile] pegasus2o5.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm, that is intriguing. I looked up the name on Namipedia to make sure I wasn't confused; here's what it said:

Origin of the name Nadia:
French form of the Russian Nadya, a pet form of Nadezhda, which is directly derived from the word meaning "hope." The name was introduced to France early in the 20th century when the Ballet Ruse was established in Paris.

No mention of any Muslim or Arabic connection. I wonder if the name could have arisen independently as a variation of an Arabic word or something?
