when you have a big list of your favorite names and only planning on ideally having 2 of each gender... how do you choose??? how do you know its the "right" name that you and your child will be happy with forever??

Granted I haven't had children, but I'm not sure that you always do. A lot of people have a list, narrow it down a bit, and then when they see the child, decide on which name seems to fit the best.

i had a giant list and as soon as i actually became pregnant, ALL of them went out the window. we ended up naming our daughter something that wasn't on my list (and my husband didn't have a written list, but it wasn't something he'd considered prior either).

of course i can't know that my child will be happy with her name forever, but we tried to make sure it was a good name and didn't rhyme with the last name or any swear words. and make sure her initials didn't spell something bad either. i think that's the best anyone can do, barring waiting until the child is 12 to let them pick their own name (but considering the names most 12 year olds like, that wouldn't be a great idea either).

I've always wondered that too.
I think one name just jumps out more than the others, on each list.
For example, you could have 10 favorites, but theres always that one that you have always like more than the rest.

I have a couple names that I really like, but I don't think I'll know for sure what we'll name the baby til it's in my/his arms.

When my husband and I first started baby talk, I was very adamant about finding out the sex and naming them before the birth. He suggested we name the baby at birth, and I sorta scoffed but now I'm all about it.

Your child probably won't like the name forever. My parents loved my name and lack of middle name and for my 21st birthday, I legally added as middle name. I hate my name for most of my life because it's so out there and everyone misprounces it. If you can figure out how to name a child something he/she will not later hate, let the rest of us know.
