[identity profile] pumpkindoodles.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
As I've mentioned in some prior entries, my husband and I have vastly different tastes in names. This has just been reinforced completely, as I had us both look at the Social Security top 500 (actually #100-500), and we both marked the names we like. We only had one or two in common on the whole list. The good news is, we have a first name for a boy that we both really like, so that should be okay. But if we have a girl, we are not so lucky. He likes names such as: Brooklyn, Ashlynn, Summer, and Camryn. My favorites are: Juliet, Eliza, Paige, Ruby, and Margaret. So, perhaps you can see my dilemma.

There was one on the list that he chose for a girl that I think I could learn to love: Melody. So what I'm looking for are middle name suggestions that sound good with Melody, that might make a good compromise between his style and mine.

Any ideas? Last name is Russell, if it matters.

....I think you should take over total naming rights of your daughter. Just saying.

Oh lord. The girl names your husband likes are about 80% more likely to be used by strippers. I'm crap at suggestions, but know my thoughts and hopes are with you, lol.

Is there any way you could convince him to settle for choosing the middle name while you choose the first name? You could always point out to him that she's getting his surname (assuming she is, anyway). Paige Camryn Russell has potential, although I really don't care for the meaning of Cameron. Ruby Ashlynn Russell is nice too.

Your husband seems to like the "lyn" sound. Have you considered Kaitlyn? I know this comm tends to frown on creative spellings, but in this case I really think your best bet at a compromise is going to be an unusual spelling of a common name. I don't know that I like the sound of Melody Kaitlyn Russell, though. I plugged his names into Nymbler and I think Melody Lauryn Russell has a nice sound to it. (And, heck, if you could get him to agree initially to the creative spellings, you might be able to talk him into the traditional spellings later.) Melody Audrey Russell or Melody Lesley Russell might suit both of your styles, and they're not even unusual spellings. If you're not bothered by the double-Rs, Melody Raven Russell might work too.

What if you each chose a middle name? Say, Melody Paige Summer Russell. Knowing he has 100% say on one middle name *might* incline him to give you more leeway on the first name. But either way, you each get at least one name you love.
