[identity profile] the-theorist.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

For some reason I have a name in my head pronounced "lil-uh" not "lye-luh."   Am I making this name up, or is it actually a name?  Regardless, how would you spell it?

Thanks :)

Also, I met an 11 year old girl recently named Hollyn (Hall-in).   wdyt?

I agree with the Lilla thing. I don't think you made it up, I'm pretty sure I've seen it in this community.

Hollyn is nice. Not the best name ever, but its nice.

I would spell it Lilla too. I don't think I've heard of it, but I've heard of Lily, Lillian, Lillias, Lillia, Liliana, Lilith, etc. I'm sure it would be a variation of one of those names

I've never heard of Lilla. I just met a girl named Lila who pronounced it Lee-luh, though. That had me confused.

And I kind of like Hollyn.

Hollin or Hollan or something (neither of those really look right) would look better, but it's okay.

lil-uh I'd spell "Lila" or "Lilla". Lye-luh I'd spell "Lilah" or "Lyla"

Hollin's an old name for the Holly tree, and Tolkien used it in LOTR as a place name. It's not awful but it does sound like a surname used as a first name, so I might avoid it personally.

Lilla is not unknown, it's a variant of Lily. It's also spelled Lillah, historically. It turns up in Anglo-Saxon, and in modern Greece and Italy.

Hollyn is my neice's name! She's only 5 months old. :) I thought it was weird when my sister and her husband first announced it, but now I like it. I've actually seen it used on a few other people, too, which surprised me. There was a mention of it on Gilmore Girls, and a guy I work with has a 4 year old granddaughter named Hollyn.

Oh and as for "lil-uh," I'd go with Lilla. Lillah is nice too.

I've been seeing Hollyn pop up a little more lately. It's not bad, but not my favorite name, but maybe b/c it's a little to close to my name Holly.
