I always thought that when a child is named after their father it goes Jr or II...but I I'm interviewing a kid Friday who, aside from having a horrible name, is a II and his older brother is Jr.

Dad - Cartmaine
Oldest son - Cartmaine Jr.
Next son - Cartmaine II

***Edit***

He explained it to me at the interview....they have different moms and each mom named them after the dad (who is actually a deadbeat so I'm not sure why you do that lol).

Makes much more sense now LOL!

I am no expert but I would think it would go
Grandfather: Cartmaine
Father: Cartmaine II
Son: Cartmaine Jr

I've never heard of giving two brothers the same name, that's just odd and confusing! Although I don't much like the practice of giving a son the same name anyhow. The kid deserves his own identity, give him the father's name as a middle name if you must pass it down.
Just my opinion though.

I know, I just always thought that it was used after II was used previously. That's how I've seen it before at least.

It does. It most certainly does. Someone just missed the memo.

Some parents are either just unimaginative or extremely egotistical I suppose. I hope they all have different nicknames, otherwise it must be confusing in their house.

George Foreman's kids are all named George. George Foreman is also out of his mind. :-)

That's totally not how you do it. Even if you did name the second son the same, he would be a III, not a II. Because he is the third one, not the second one. The only time you would ever have a II is if a boy were named after a grandfather or something because then he wouldn't actually be a Jr.

I have a friend named Carl who has the same name as his Grandfather and father, and probably his great-grandfather as well.

Anyways, I asked if he was Carl III or IV and he said he isn't because he doesn't have the exact first and middle name as his previous ancestors. Not sure if he's right, but I could see why he refuses to be called Carl Jr.

Dr. Seuss says it best:

Did I ever tell you that Mrs. McCave
Had twenty-three sons, and she named them all Dave?

Well, she did. And that wasn't a smart thing to do.
You see, when she wants one, and calls out "Yoo-Hoo!
Come into the house, Dave!" she doesn't get one.
All twenty-three Daves of hers come on the run!

This makes things quite difficult at the McCaves'
As you can imagine, with so many Daves.
And often she wishes that, when they were born,
She had named one of them Bodkin Van Horn.
And one of them Hoos-Foos. And one of them Snimm.
And one of them Hot-Shot. And one Sunny Jim.
Another one Putt-Putt. Another one Moon Face.
Another one Marvin O'Gravel Balloon Face.
And one of them Zanzibar Buck-Buck McFate...

But she didn't do it. And now it's too late.

1. Shouldn't that be a III?
2. Couldn't they think of another name? Surely, there are plenty to choose from.
