I think Eugenie is the prettiest name, lately. Opinions?

Pronounced: "YOU-jen-ee," or "you-GENE-ee"? Which is proper?

The British royals say it the first way, but the only person I know named Eugenie pronounces it the second.

I went to college in Eugene, OR. I hated the city, and I really hate this name. Too many associations for me.

I think it is pretty, if you're surrounded by French people who can pronounce it properly :)

Otherwise I don't really know how to pronounce it without slipping into a French accent, which is ridiculous, and "you-GENE-ee" just sounds bastardized to me.

Eugenia is a bit more straightforward for English speakers. I think it could grow on me, although the immediate appeal of Eugenie is greater :)

I think it's old and outdated. I just think of the Duchess of York's daughter.

One of my characters was called Eugenia. I pronounced it 'YOO-jee-nay-a'. According to google it can be pronounced 'yoo-JEEN-yah' or 'yoo-JEE-nee-uh'.

Eugenie is pretty sweet. I wouldn't use it though.

I don't like the name, and I don't know how to pronounce it. I would try to pronounce it like Eugene with an extra E on the end. so, your second pronunciation.

Oh, and I pronounce it YOU-jen-ee. I really don't like it as much with the other pronunciation.

Actually, the British say you-JAY-nee or you-ZHAY-nee, depending on the speaker's accent. you-ZHAY-nee is how the princess of the name says it.

I've never actually heard anyone say 'YOU-jen-ee' in this country; the only person I've heard say that was American.

Anything close in spelling to Eugene can't be pretty.
In my opinion.

Eugene reminds me of eugenics, so I really don't like it. Eugenie is obviously the same

i went to college with a girl from Korea named Eugenie. We called her Genie. We also use to call her Gynie, as in the gine sound in vagina when we felt like being silly. Just a thought. haha

NO no the royals pronounce is you-jean-ee.
I think it's very very ugly, as is Beatrice.. but i'd rather be called Bea than Eugenie any day.

I always pronounced it "yoo-zhay-NEE", and spell it with an acute accent over the second E. In America, I suspect you'd get "yoo-JEEN-ee" a lot, which is a bit revolting-sounding IMO.
