Well, Eleanor is after my husband's grandmother that he's extremely close to.
Rebekah is sort of after me. I have a Polish maiden name that people always had a hard time pronouncing, so I would tell everyone that it rhymed with Rebecca to make it easier. It was kind of a family joke that my parents should have named one of us girls that. It didn't take long for that to become my nickname, but I'd had a friend in 6th and 7th grade who spelled it Rebekah and I thought that was the coolest spelling ever, not knowing back then that it was actually an old Biblical spelling, so that's how I opted to have it spelled. In my husband's family, there's a lot of usage of maiden names as middle names, but they're pretty old English and German so they had names that fit that tradition much better. Since my maiden name was totally out of the question for a middle name, I thought it would be sort of clever to give her my nickname that's associated with my maiden name.
I think Eleanor is such a cute name! I love the nn Ellie, too :)
I like the story behind choosing Rebekah. It's nice that it's your daughter's middle name; it's different and sounds really nice with Eleanor in front of it. Plus with this spelling, it's more unique AND she doesn't really have to spell it out all the time for people. I get asked CONSTANTLY how I pronounce my name (especially since I go by Bekah), and how do I spell it, and why do I spell it "wrong." It gets a tad old. I also had a friend in about 9th grade who said she loved how I spell my name and that she wants to use it if she ever has kids. She and I aren't close anymore, but we're facebook friends. She and her boyfriend have a house together but no kids, but I'm curious to see if she has a daughter if she uses Rebekah :)
I have to admit that I'm not a fan of Ellie, plus that's what my husband's grandmother goes by. So to make it more her own name, we use Nora as her nickname.
As much as I love the Rebekah spelling, I don't know if I'd have used it as a first name exactly for the reasons you say. I can imagine what a pain it is for you to have to spell it for people all the time.
