What do you think of the name Miriam?

It's one of those names that I've disliked for years, but for some reason I suddenly think it's lovely.

That's how I'm starting to feel about Beatrice!

I'm not a huge fan of Miriam - I like Mary and other variations better. To me, Miriam is definitely a name from my Mom's generation. In fact, it was the name of one of her best friends from university.

I like it. It's a fairly common name for Jewish girls.

Personally, I've always loved it! Unfortunately DH is not a huge fan so it probably won't make it to our short list, but I think it's really lovely.

It's my MIL's name but getting past that, I like it.

I love it and it was on my short list for a while. I used to teach math and I had this wonderful student who made me a duct-tape wallet whose name was Miriam and her nickname was Mim (because it's how her younger sibling pronounced it as a baby).

One problem I had was its meaning, though. Off the top of my head, I can't remember exactly what it is, but I know it's not happy. Like, sorrowful or something like that.

It means "bitter," but so does Mary (they're the same name, in a way) and all the names descended from Mary (Marilyn, Mariana, etc.). Doesn't seem to have really slowed it down any!

Hmmm. I was always taught it had a two meanings, the "bitterness" thing because Miriam is often used as a diminutive of Mary, but also in Jewish circles it means "songbird" because Miriam was the sister of Moses who sang to him in the reeds, and later helped Aaron be his voice. The second meaning is definitely the one I like better!

Oh, I hadn't heard the "songbird" thing, I do like that.

It just sounds like an old lady name to me. I can't picture holding a tiny baby and thinking "Miriam!" It's not a bad name, just an outdated one.

I've always disliked it. It sounds kind of ugly and Old Lady to me.

I prefer Maryam, but only to look at. I don't like the sound of the name, so I'd never use it.

I know a Miriam who uses Mim as a nickname.

Not sure if I like it.. it's a little harsh sounding for my liking I think

I've always LOVED Miriam. Partly for the Bible namesake (a strong woman! in the Bible!) and partly just for the sound of the name. I just love everything about it. And it doesn't end up with an "ah" or "ee" sound, which makes it unusual among girl's names.

I really like it! It happens to be several of my friends' Hebrew name, and it also reminds me of an awesome Israeli restaurant in Brooklyn. :)

We liked Lucia Miriam as a name combo.
