What do you guys think of Gale for a boy?

Do you think he'd get the "Gail's a girls name!" a lot?

Gail is a big family name on my side just FYI.

I like it. It's not so different from Hale or Cale, both of which are more on-trend right now than the feminine Gail. The male character Gale from The Hunger Games book series may also put it in the heads of younger people as a boy's name.

I think most boys would have a hard time with it and might choose to go by their middle names or a nickname...both because it has a feminine version and because it has the sound "gay" in it, which is rough during middle school. I knew a boy with the middle name Meredith and another with the middle name Carroll and both were extremely secretive about their middle names...and were teased pretty mercilessly when their names were found out. And those were just middle names!

As a word and a name I like it though. Just wouldn't use it personally for reasons mentioned above.

Huh, to be honest the "gay" sound hadn't even occurred to me but I can see how that could cause problems. Yeah, middle school kids can be cruel when it comes to names.

I dislike the name, but think it fits for a boy better than it does for a girl... They might be called gay a lot....

I don't personally care for it, but when I see that spelling, I only think boy. So, I didn't see Gale and think "wait, what's a girl's name!" or anything, I just don't like it.

I like it and Gail isn't really popular for girls right now so a lot of kids probably wouldn't think of that.

I'm reading a book now where one of the major characters is a man named Gail. I like it a lot (partially due to him) and like the Gale spelling better even though its like the wind.

I am only 3/4 of the way done and I can't decide whether I love Gail Wynand or absolutely hate him.

To be honest, when I first read the name I thought it was a female character and had to re-read the line twice to see the "he", but after reading it for a while it really grew on me as a male name.

I like Gale for a boy. However, I DO think he'd quite often get "Gail's a girl's name!" But there are also boy Ashleys and boy Stacys and even boy Lindsays who manage to pull off names that are more commonly used on girls.

I had a male professor once named Gale, and I thought it was totally weird. I've never been overly fond of Gail, but I really, really loathe Gale, primarily because it's my mother-in-law's name and I have no fond feelings for her at all. I've heard her introduce herself as "Gale, like the wind."

I like it. I'm sure he would get the "Gail's a girls name!" bit fairly often, but kids can find something to make fun of for any name you give your child, so I wouldn't let that discourage you from using it.

I much prefer Gale for a boy than Gail for a girl. Actually, I really like it.

He might get the 'Gail's a girl's name' or even gay jokes, but kids being kids, they'll find something to tease someone about out of anything. I agree with how_obscure too.

Gale Harold comes to mind for me; I didn't know it was used on males before him.
I now think of it on either gender, but I don't like it in general.
