What do you think about the name Dexter? I am aware there is a drama or something on Showtime by this name. Is there too much of an association to get past? Also, what would you pair it with?

While I've seen the tv show, that is not why I like the name, just to be clear.

I like it. I'm not a Dexter fan (haven't really watched it), but I've heard it's a great series. I think by the time the child is older, the association will be gone, but for now, yes, I think people may associate the name with the series. I also think of Dexter's Laboratory which is actually really cute.

HAH! My husband's cousin had a son and named him Dexter Data. Dexter for Dexter's Labratory (the cartoon) and Data for Star Trek. And to make things more hillarious, this kid was born with a curly red afro, just like Dex! But he is such a Dexter and I have since grown to love the name, but good lord is that kid set up to be a nerd! LOL

Just thought I would share the story since you brought up the name lol

I love the show, and the character, but still can't get the Point Dexter references out of my head. And we have one boy 'D' name and a family of D boys on my SO's side so the letter is out in future. Otherwise, I think it's making a comeback. : )

We named our son Desmond and get a lot of the "Oh, like LOST?" It had NOTHING to do with LOST, thank you. Ergh.

I actually kind of like. I think it's a cute name for a kid and one that an adult can grow into as well.

It'd be hard to use a name that wasn't somehow connected with one show or another so I don't think that should be a huge concern. Someone will always find some association to make with a name.

I think it's a cute name, but I think there's a difference between a name that's 'somehow connected' with a TV show, and a name that is the title of a TV show.

For example, if someone told me they named their child 'Blossom' or 'Clarissa', the corresponding shows would be the first reference that came to mind, and they haven't been on TV in probably decades.

I think it's really cute. I would go for it if you really like it. I agree with the show probably blowing over by the time he is older and people probably won't relate the two names. :)

I like it. I'd pair it with something classic to offset the oddness of Dexter.

This name always makes me think of nerds because of Poindexter- a character from Felix the Cat. Apparently, poindexter as a term for nerd is because of this character. I also think of the cartoon character Dexter from Dexter's Laboratory (a nerd) and the tv show (which I've never seen).

I don't really like it. I don't mind the connotation much, but I don't care for the sound. Right now there might be some association, but I'm sure it would eventually blow over. =)

I love the name, but my husband says he's uncomfortable naming a child with the same name as a fictional serial killer (even a lovable adorable one).

He makes the connection and thinks others will as well and if Dex wasn't a serial killer it wouldn't bother him, but as it is...

So we're saving Dexter for our next pet, it was the only compromise we could come up with.

The show is what I instantly think of. Then this creepy kid who went to high school with me and took Viagra. But other than that, beyond all that, I still don't like it. It's...I just don't think it's a nice name.

I think it will be quite a while until the name Dexter is not associated with a [albeit lovable] serial killer or the cartoon. Aside from that, the name's not really my style anyway.
