New ferrets

I work at a research lab with a colony of female ferrets. Each time we get a new batch of them, they get named according to a theme. We are going to be getting six more this next week and their theme is rivers. They will be Nile, Zambezi, Ganges, Indus, Tigris and Euphrates. I think this is a disappointing theme - or at least not utilized to its fullest. I would've liked to see Mississippi, Blue Danube, Thames, etc. Oh well.

For fun, here are the other names, both past and present. Themes of the past have included gems, celestial, flowers, spices and vegetables. (Yes, I think the vegetable names are stupid too.)

Opal, Coral, Athena, Andromeda, Persephone, Cassandra, Clio, Telesto, Sirius, Star, Zim, Saturn, Venus, Pluto, Jupiter, Bom, Electra, Lime, Sassafrass, Terra, Rosemary, Thyme, Sage, Dahlia, Bramble, Magnolia, Jasmine, Violet, Lily, Maverick, Juniper, Carrot, Onion, Cabbage, Iris, Orchid, Daisy, Cayenne, Daffodil, Callisto.

That's interesting that all the themes are nature-y. Like, there's no "80's pop stars" theme or anything, lol. I love nature names though. Iris is my #1 girl name.

We do that with kittens at the shelter where I volunteer. And sometimes with small mammals that come in large batches.

We've had cheeses, which actually was several litters:
Cheddar, Swiss, and Munster
Colby Jack, JalapeƱo Jack, Pepper Jack, and Monterey Jack
and the last litter: Bleu, Brie, and Roquefort.

Other themes have been more obvious:
Crosby, Nash, Stills, Young
Harpo Groucho, Chico
Archie, Moe, Curly, Larry, and Wanda
Nina, Pinta, Maria,

there are others, but I forget them now...

I like the flower idea, and the herbs. I'll suggest those next time we get an unnamed batch.

My husband would have been very tempted by Pepper Jack, it's his favorite cheese.

I don't know if they did that at the shelter where we adopted out boys. Zippy had a brother named Hendrix and I can't quite see the connection.

Shadow's original name was Yale (his first owner changed it), so maybe his siblings were named after other colleges.

"the Jacks" were my favorite group - they were all so cute! Pepper was so sweet! They all found good homes :)

That's good to hear!

I always wondered how they chose names for the animals at the shelter! My cat was Pip when I adopted her, and my parents' cat had no name at all. I thought it was sad that he didn't even have a temporary name... fortunately, my parents call him about a dozen names to make up for it. :)

I wrote a story once about a woman who owned a tribe of ferrets all named after composers. Perhaps that's a future theme you could use.

I actually like the vegetable names - I'm pretty sure every name I've come up with for a pet has been some kind of food, and a lot of the inanimate objects I name also get food names.

Out of those you posted, I like Persephone, Cassandra, Clio, Rosemary, Dahlia, Violet, Lily and Daisy. And Cabbage is kind of cute.

Oh, that's a cute idea! I like the spices theme. Don't really care much for the gems theme, but mostly because my favorite gems are labradorite, iolite, and sodalite, which don't really work well as names.

But from the ones you listed, the ones I like best as ferret names are Euphrates, Clio, Lime, Sassafras, Bramble, Maverick, Juniper, Onion, Cayenne, and Daffodil. Bramble is the best!
