I work at a college and I was looking up some info on an incoming student yesterday.  Someone with a similar last name popped up on my search, but it was the first name that definitely caught my attention:  Lesbia.

She had a nice middle name. Something like Rosalia. So I'm hoping she went by that, but I still wouldn't register for college as Lesbia, that's for sure.

I'm hoping that her parents' first language is not English. I can see where it would sound pretty if that were the case.

Not sure since I don't know this student, and the last name had no obvious ethnic origin to me. But I would think the root (which I'm assuming is either Greek or Latin - I'm no linguist) would mean basically the same thing in several languages. But I guess I also hope that somehow they didn't know what they were doing to that poor kid.

I expected it was something like that too, but I doubt most people would understand its origins. If it didn't have its current associations, I reckon it'd be a nice name.
