yep. as a biologist, this was the only place my brain could go. It's one of those "sounds ok" but means something not very nice and most people with at least an intro to bio class will know what it means.
I didn't think the meaning was "not very nice." I thought it was nice enough and quite accurate! But, not necessarily what one might want referenced. Being one who might name nerdy, this might otherwise be a bonus for me.
I guess I just think naming a child after a domain which includes many protists and fungi isn't the meaning I would like. YMMV. I honestly don't like the sound of it either, but I was trying to not tear it totally apart.
i misread it at first and thought it was Eureka (as in the thing you shout when you think of something....also as in the name of the dragon (i think) from that old nickelodeon show Eureka's Castle) and then i thought of it as a dogs name but i can't remember exactly what dog was named Eureka on tv somewhere...
and then i realized i was misreading it and now it just reminds me of some kind of anime name and i think that people would have a tough time pronouncing it. Which sucks as a child because you have to correct adults all the time and that's intimidating (take it from me, that always happened to me when i was little and it was awful because i was so shy)
I was a bio major in college, so I'm sure you know by now where my first thought went. And actually, I could totally see a biologist naming their daughter this.
References aside, I'm not a huge fan of the sound of it. I think it's that "eu" at the beginning. However, if someone did have this name, they could always go by Kari.
I first thought of "eukaryote". "Eu" is actually a prefix meaning "good", so I guess it doesn't have completely negative connotations. Eukarya is a made up name, though, so in the end I'm against it.

Date: 2010-05-26 03:57 pm (UTC)You asked what I think of Eukarya, that's what I think of: Biology class and cells. Actually what came to mind first was "bacteria".
So yea... not a fan of the name.
I do love your icon though. :)
