Penny?

Hey, baby_names folks. Two things!

1. I really like the name Penny, but it feels like a nickname to me. What names lend themselves to that nickname? The only one I can think of is Penelope. ... bonus points if the 'pen' is a middle/end syllable instead of the first.

2. Just for fun: I like to think of totally crazy wouldn't-ever-give-to-a-kid names that have reasonable nicknames. My current favorite is Triceratops nn Cera/Sarah, but a raaather more reasonable example is Orion nn Rion/Ryan (Orion's actually too reasonable for this 'game'), or Galaxy nn Lexi. Got any? It's fun. :D

2. I don't think Orion is unreasonable. In fact, it's on the rise (http://www.babynamewizard.com/voyager/#prefix=orion&ms=false&exact=false) and is now more popular than, say, Howard (http://www.babynamewizard.com/voyager/#prefix=howa&ms=false&exact=false).

But I get what you're asking. I've always fancied Cinderella (with both Cindy and Ella as nickname options) — or Melanotaenia (call her Melanie, Mel, Lana, Lani, Taney, whatever).

I went to grade school with an Orion, but he didn't pronounce it like the constellation.

Huh! I ran across it in the "Cat Who" mysteries by Lillian Jackson Braun. Hippolyta "Polly" is the main character's longtime girlfriend.

We had a cat named Orion once that we just called Ryan at the time! I guess we weren't very original. :)
