It makes me think of one of the villains on the show Firefly. His name is Rance Burgess and he's an asshole cowboy-wannabe who terrorizes everyone in his little frontier town, lol. So it doesn't have very good connotations for me, either, but I think it's a "legitimate" name, fwiw.
