I work at a summer camp, and we occasionally get some names that cause me to double-take for a variety of reasons.
Thoughts?

Females:

Calliope
Kaymin (her mom loves the Cayman islands, I was told).
Aoife
Henley
Merri
Sailor-Kate
Willa
Kyri (Annika)
Tamaria

Boys:

Aritt
Rainbow

I think Rainbow is my personal "wtf" favourite. It actually suits him, though.

I would never name my child Rainbow, simply because I work at a grocery store by that name and I'd hate to think of my child and associate hell with them. ;-)

I like Aoife as well, I'd just never heard it before and butchered the pronunciation at first. (Cultural fail on my part, hahah). I also think Calliope is pretty.

I'm jealous that your work establishment is called Rainbow. If I named a kid after grocers in town, he or she would be called "Food Lion." Classy fo' sho':)

Aoife is an Irish name and is pronounced Eve.

Henley makes me think of a shirt.

Merri makes me think of my mother, whose name was Merry. It also makes me think of LOTR.

Sailor-Kate is just horrible.

I knew a woman whose name was Calliope. She pronounced it Cal'-ee-oh-pee. :/

Interesting, my Aoife pronounced it "EE-fa." I guess it's another variant or some Americanization thing?

I thought Calliope, Aoife, and Kyri were exotic and reasonable, but Sailor-Kate? Not so much. She refused all nicknames and variations, which is understandable as it's her name and all, but dkjsf;j;akfjas.

No, Aoife is always pronounced EE-fa. She might've been thinking that it's sometimes used to be the Irish form of Eve.

lol! My brother and his gf had a kitten at one point, and named her Calliope, and pronounced it Cal-ee-oh-pee as well. It hurt my brain, but I didn't want to correct them. They actually named her after some human they knew of, with the same pronunciation. :-/

I've always had a thing for Calliope. There's a student at the college where I work who has that name, but she goes by Kelly, which I find so disappointing.

Sailor-Kate is all kinds of ridiculous.

And I wouldn't name a kid Rainbow, but if anyone was going to, I wouldn't have thought of it as a boy's name.
