[identity profile] becomingun.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
This morning on the bus I saw a young-ish(I'd guess mid 20s?) with twin boys who looked about 2 or so, and when they got off the bus near the daycare in town, I saw that the boys' names were written on the back of their little baseball caps:

Caedyn and Phillip

My question to you is, would you ever mix styles so drastically? With twins? What are your thoughts on mixing styles?

The problem here is spelling. Verbally, the two name styles don't clash. I don't think they would if a different spelling of Caedyn had been chosen - Caden or Cadon, perhaps. But with this particular spelling, the styles are such a contrast as to be ridiculous. It's too much.

I don't like seeing twins with matching names. They are 2 seperate people, not one.

My daughter has a set of b/g twin siblings. They are Connor and Jessica. My friend has twin boys named Mason and Julian.

I had a dream I had twins one night and I named them Brody and Pacey.

If I had twins, I would have named them Josephine and Duncan....lol

I don't personally have a problem with sibsets that don't "match." It was actually a foreign concept to me until I joined this community.

I loathe matchy matchy names, especially when they're twins. But I also hate clashing styles.

I loathe matchy names on twins, but I don't like them when they're drastically different either.

What's up with Caedyn's spelling? His name looks a mess. =(

Ugh, that spelling is just atrocious in general.

I don't think I'll end up with matchy names for my future offspring, but they'll be diverse from a cultural standpoint. For example, I want to honor my late Italian grandfather, whose name was Nicola (Nee-coh-la).

But within the English-accepted spectrum of names, it does irk me too, to see a trendy name like Kylie in a sibset with more traditional or complex names like Victoria or Genevieve.

I wouldn't say those names that you mentioned clash though. They aren't as matchy as say, Emma and Emily, but they still go together well. Connor and Jessica are both fairly common names. Likewise, Mason and Julian are both polysyllable names that end in 'n'. Josephine and Duncan both have vivid histories and are complex names.

Besides the horrible spelling of Caedyn, I don't really get why those two names can't go together?

Is it possible Caedyn was adopted after the family who named him that was declared unfit?

Yes, yes, and I don't have a problem with it. It's better than having names that have a "theme", rhyme, or match (so to speak). Especially with twins. The more different the names sound, the better.

I prefer it when family names mesh well, style wise.

I actually can't see how it DOESN'T bother people. I understand people are their own person (it was mentioned above) but it's not like you are giving your children the same name. It's an individual person in a unified group (the family). Does that make sense?

That is quite odd. Then again, say I really loved Caedyn, and my partner really loved Philip, I think it would be silly to not use them on twins simply because the styles don't match! I strongly believe that if you love a name, you should use it.
Having said that...I love the name Philip!

I find it a little odd, but agree with another poster - if Caden was spelled as such (Less trendy) then the names would go together fine. They sound OK together but the spelling just makes me blah.

However, it's not like they're named Caedyn and Braedyn or something (although, I'm sure there's more than one set of twins with these names UGH!)

If I had twins right now, they'd be:
Asher & Isabel
Asher & Darcy
Isabel & Lucia

I don't know... on one hand I really hate matchy names and I see children as their own people with their own identity etc. etc. But on the other hand I'd be a hypocrite if I said I wasn't worried that my two favourite boys names (Silas and Jamie) were WAY too different from each other to actually use the name Jamie if I had another boy. So... I guess I'll just have to stay on the fence for this one ;)

I don't think twins (or any siblings) need perfectly matching names... however, the styles do clash a bit for me.

I hate it. I agree with the rest that matchy-matchy isn't good, but similar styles is nice.

I think there are boundaries on either end of the spectrum. Caedyn (spelled so kreaytiflee) absolutely clashes with Phillip, which is a strong classic name, in my opinion. This is too strong a mismatch.

However, names that are too closely matched (and I've heard them. Ugh), especially on twins is annoying in its own right.

My boyfriend has younger brothers that are twins. Robert and Timothy, but are shortened to Robbie and Timmy. I think those are similar, (and my boyfriend is Danny and his younger sister Jenny) but those were all nickanmes that weren't planned out, so I think it's okay in the end.

I like Caedyn...but I don't know if I like it for a boy.

I definitely don't like mixing styles...

I'm not big on matchy-matchy names and I don't mind mixing styles. That being said, I'm not a fan of either of those names.

Twinsets I've known:

Stephen & John
Abby & Jon
Hannah & Hailey
Whitney & Jessica
Levi & Tyler
Cody & Ben
Marc & Mitchell
Lonell & Tiara
Kevin & Jon
Malory & Paul - (J/K, we're not really twins but everyone thinks we are.)
