Duke

I don't know what came over me, or where I heard the name but I decided today that if my husband and I have a boy I want to name him Duke.

So, our children would be Aida (Samantha Jane), and Duke (Emery Lee). I don't love the way it sounds all together, but I suddenly adore the name Duke and our next child will be named after my husband since my daughter is named after me.

What do you think? Aida & Duke?

:( i always associate Duke with dogs because when i was growing up i knew two people who had dogs named Duke.

Sorry! I just wanted to bring it up in case it's a common association! Don't feel bad, I loved the name Max and everyone tells me that THAT's a dog name too :(

My very first thought was "Duke is a dog's name or a title". And I don't think I have ever met a dog named duke, maybe it's the marmaduke association?

I also don't think it goes very well with Aida(though if I remember correctly you pronounce this differently than I would so maybe it flows better with your pronunciation...)

Yeah I thought of dogs too. I don't really care for the name either, but Aida is pretty. And I like Emery. :)

I agree with birdsonthewire that Duke has strong a strong association as a dog name. to me it's a big, ugly, angry dog. :\

They're okay. I'm not a huge fan of Duke, but it could be worse. It doesn't sound too horrible with Aida, but I would also maybe assume that the parents were big movie/theatre fans --> Aida from the musical and Duke after John Wayne. But that might just be me.

You know, even though I hate the university, I don't hate Duke as a name. Do you pronounce Aida just like Ada? If so, I think Duke and Aida go together pretty well.

I don't have the dog association to the name, probably because I'm not from an English-speaking country. To me the only association is the noble title, and as such it sounds rather pretentious.

I think Aida is quite cute, though.

I'm sorry, but I would have to stifle a snicker if I ever met or heard of anyone being named Duke. And then after they'd left I'd tell the person I was with, "Oh, my gosh, did you hear his name?" and we'd laugh about it. It's terribly silly and tacky. Plus it's too close to dookey. :(

I like Duke, I think you could definitely make it work. (Aida is gorgeous).

I am trying to think of a name that might hold Duke as a nickname, but failing ... if you're unsure about it, you could always just use it as an unrelated nickname. I knew a guy who went by Duke, but his actual birth name was something classic/common.

Duke makes me think of Channing Tatum, so it's not terrible.

But definitely more of a title or pet name.
