NameNerds! Unlike other name popularity lists, we group names by spelling and count overall popularity that way. I think it gives a more accurate picture of a name's popularity. For example, the name Brianna at #22 for 2007, with Briana being #120, Breanna at #138, & Bryanna #448. You'd think that a name pronounced /bree-anna/ wasn't terribly popular, right? However, when you put all the spellings together, the name ranks at #11, 11 points higher than the highest ranking spelling alone. Sure, a Brianna may be quite different from a Breana, but when yelling the name across a crowded playground, a Breana, Briana, Bryanna etc. will all come running if you yell BRIANNA!

Fascinating!

The funniest thing on that site is the stork images at the top of this page: http://www.namenerds.com/uucn/2009highlights.html

Oh, they took it down for the actual list! It was two stork images with the babies they were carrying saying "don't name me Kayleigh!" and "don't name me Kayden!"

No surprises to see Aiden, Jayden and Caden in the top ten for boys.

Ooh interesting!

Such atrocious spellings of Olivia and Emily! I do love Emilie though. I suppose because it's not uncommon over here...and it's a legitimate French spelling.

I also didn't know Christian and Cameron were so popular.

I had a baby in 2008 and named her Sophia...and according to this site, that was the #1 girls' name that year if 'Sofia' is included. Wow! Who'da thunk? :)

This is great. I think this is way more reflective of actual naming trends- I thought it was so weird to see Jacob at the top of the list when I knew that there were definitely more Aidens out there.

Fascinating website! I think I'll be spending some time reading this one!! Only thing I noticed is that there are many names that I would pronounce differently, based on spelling. Like Madelyn and Madeline. I can understand why they're lumped together, but I see them as totally different names.

An aside, I hate HATE HATE "Bryanna"

I refuse to agree with anyone who says it is pronounced as Brianna.

Bry = cry, try, fry, etc.

Even Bryan or Ryan are not the "ree" sound grr!

*deep breath*
