I was thinking this morning about the name Gus. I just don't like it. It reminds me of the little fat mouse in Cinderella...but that's not why I don't like it. I can't figure it out.

What do you think of Gus???

I love it. : ) Most of the grandma/grandpa names sound really fresh and interesting to me nowadays.

I think it sounds like Gas. I also think it's the name of a big, fat mean cat.

The reason I don't like it as a name or a syllable is that it is the same syllable that is stressed in the word disGUSting. YMMV!

I don't consider it a name in itself, but a nickname for August/Augustus or Gustav(o). I wouldn't use these names myself, but they're not objectionable. I don't mind Gus as a nickname.

I think of Cinderella too! And Lonesome Dove. Robert Duvall played Augustus "Gus." I love that mini-series but I dislike the name. It's a jolly name to me, though.

I love August, so I wouldn't dump it in favor of Gus, but Gus is cute as a pet form of Augustin(e).

It reminds me of Gus the Theatre Cat from "Cats" (or Eliot's "Ol' Possum's Book of Practical Cats"). I named a barn kitten Gus once. I never saw it again. Ha!

I actually LOVE IT. I'd never use it because it doesn't really fit with any of the other names I like, but I like it.

My childhood dog was named Gus. It’s a great name for a huge shaggy dog (Bearded Collie). My boss has a big rottweiler named Gus too. It also fits him. We always called our dog Gustopher (extended nickname—his REAL name was jus Gus). When he’d run, we’d say, “it’s galloping Gustopher!”

I don't like it at all. I suppose it would be okay as a nn, but I'm not sure what you could get Gus out of.

I thought it was short for Angus but then all these other names people suggested make sense too

I like it as a nickname for some other names such as Augustus or something. But I wouldn't name my kid that.

I love it, although it's not my style at all!
