I want to stab everyone who feels the need to name their son ANY -den name (Aiden, Kayden, Hayden, Brayden, Jaden...), seriously. In 3 years I'm going to be teaching elementary school and am NOT going smile when my class has 5 Aiden's, 3 Jaden's and 2 Brayden's in it. Be original damnit!

Ethanael sounds like it is trying to be Biblical, but it's not. That bothers me. All of these names are too strange for words.

I kind of like Kanyon, but I wouldn't be afraid to use Canyon. It's a cool word.

Ibn actually means "son" in Arabic, so it would kind of be the equivalent to naming a child Ben (Hebrew for "son"). So maybe it's not that weird, but most people probably would have trouble pronouncing it.

some of those are horrid and some are alright.
There is a girl at the school where I work named Hiranya. She's really sweet. Her little sister is named Himani.
They are white but I think they practice Hinduism or Buddhism or some sort of Eastern religion.

Roninho - this one sounds Portuguese to me.
Hamda - I'm guessing this comes from the Arabic "hamdi" meaning praise
Ibn - doesn't this mean something like "son of" in Arabic? I have typically seen this in the middle of Arabic names; not sure I've seen it up front before.
Ixchel - this is a name of a Mayan goddess (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ixchel)
Ajay - this is an Indian name (I am guessing it comes from the Sanskrit word "jaya" meaning victory)
Gbemi - this sounded like a name from some part of Africa. I find that it is a common short version of Olugbemileke which may be from... Nigeria? Not sure about that.
Jameer - probably also Indian

I think the worst of all of these is the Arabic word Jihad which means "strive or struggle" but is most often associated with Islam's "holy war" or the fundamentalist terrorists. Talk about having a stigma attached to your name.

I love Althea! The greek myth behind it is grim, but it's a lovely name. But Meg is a nickname. Althea Margaret would be lovely.

Aylin is Turkish. "Ay" means "moon" in Turkish - it is a common prefix and suffix for Turkish names.

the first ones are debatable based on some of the cultural points people brought up in other comments. personally, the only one I like is Althea.

except Alyse, as I know someone with this name & I guess bc of that, it never SEEMS wrong to spell it like that. oh & I thought that's how Hayden was supposed to be spelled?

I didn't mean that Hayden was an odd spelling, I just put it under the "interesting names and spellings" category. Doesn't mean I don't like those names. i.e. I like Eliel, Aylin, and Ryann.

I met someone called Alyce recently. It really bothered me. It looks like Alice with the i swapped for a y... but it was pronounced the same as Elise. I don't know if it's a variant pronounciation of Alice, or a variant spelling of Elise.. it seems like a mixture of the two and cuts off the name from its roots.

I don't think I'd mind Alyce as much if it were pronounced like Alice. Although, I do love the name Alice and would rather not see it "butchered" or altered in any way. Oh well, what can ya do?

Yeah exactly - the spelling is so much more like Alice than Elise, it really bugged me. The y is annoying anyway, but otherwise every letter in the name is the same as Alice

Anaya is the surname of some Hispanic people I know, so I can't see it as a first name.
