[identity profile] requiem-morrow.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
The other day I came across some articles on name nerds about virtue names. I like a surprising number of virtue names, particularly given the Puritan/religious connotations that go with them. Here are two lists from the site. The first are old school Puritan names (many, many made me giggle). The second list is a collection of more modern virtue names. WDYT?

Felicity and Verity are both on my list. They also fall on both the old school and the new school lists. True and Ever are on my list and the modern one. Honor and Merit are old GP names of mine. I can see the appeal in Temperence, Grace, Wisdom, and Charity, I suppose. The rest are pretty much not my style or just plain weird.

These remind me of a book I read in elementary school. It was some kind of series of fictional diaries from various time periods. The Puritain one featured a girl named Remember Patience Whipple, with Whipple being the last name.

I've really loved the name Temperance lately, since getting into the show Bones.

Your family tree Submit wouldn't happen to be Submit Throop, would it? If so, we are related. :)

Unfortunately, no. Her last name is Joy.

I really, really don't like these types of names. Meanings aside, I just don't like the way any of them sound. X(

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm... Maybe Ever and Love as middles, but that's it.

All I can say on that first list is wow. Especially that really long one about Christ dying for you and whatnot. I hope that kid would have a nickname so that you wouldn't have to speak an entire sentence each time you called for him. Or her? I really have no idea.

I actually really like Constance and Justice (although I admitted long ago that that was a guilty pleasure that I will never get to use... even if I am a student of political science). I like the sound of Comfort but I couldn't use it--same with Amity, because although I think it's a lovely name, I think everyone will associate it to Amityville.

I think Solace has a nice sound, as does Temperance, and Honor. I like Joy, although I somehow tend to overlook the fact that it's a virtue name.

Oddly enough, I hate Felicity. I know it's a normal name, and I really like Felix, so it would stand to reason that I like Felicity, but I don't at all.

Honour/Honoria

Hosanna is a GP of mine.

Great list, better than the one I have saved! A big GP thing for me is pairing simple, pioneer girl-y first names with Puritan middle names. Some of my favorites (on Puritan-light :P) were:
Emma Prudence
Ada Temperence
Sarah Constance
Dinah Grace
Clara Clemency

I should have more fun with this with the more unused Puritan names... haven't done it in a while!

I love, love Patience, I would use it. I really like hope, and I sort of like Ever and True.

This was great, thanks! Felicity is my favorite out of these, and the one I'd be most likely to use.

Pretty good timing on this, considering yesterday there was a recent births list with the name Christ-Is Hope!

I get the whole being virtuous thing, but dude, naming your kid Fornication?!? That's messed up.

Okay, some of these I would never actually use ..

But the ones that I don't mind the sound of are:

Amity
Ardour
Charity
Cherish - I have a friend with this middle name
Ever - I love this, as a middle name.
Faith - see above.
Hope - I actually really like this one, even for a first name.
Mercy
Merry
Serendipity - what? It's cute .. I wouldn't really use it! :p
Truth
Verity - total guilty pleasure but I really like it. Okay, most of these are lol.

I've never been into these types of names. Though I do like the sound of Ever.

I love puritan names, it's a shame I will never be able to use them as I don't live in an English-speaking country. Anyway, especially love the following:

Ashes
Dust
Earth
Faith
Grace
Joy
Lively
Love
Remember (a big favourite)
Silence
Truth

Ever (another very big favourite)
Fate
Hope
Laughter
Life
Luck
Memory
True
