[identity profile] rachie-01.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
My friend at work has just told everyone his girlfriend is pregnant. Being curious, I asked if they had any names. He said, "Well, Poppy if it's a girl" which I think is a lovely name. "If it's a boy, we'll call him Pheonix"... WHY?! Does anyone like Pheonix?

Also does anyone ever hope someone is having a baby of a certain sex just so that don't get landed with a crap name? I have my fingers crossed for a girl, haha. Examples? What did they end up having?

I like Phoenix a lot. It made it onto the short list for the boy name of the child I'm pregnant with.

Agreed, someone is always going to not like a name. It's the wonderful thing about names, there are always so many that someone's bound to dislike it. Everyone has different styles and tastes of names. As long as people don't go around saying "don't name your baby that!", it's perfectly harmless to dislike a name.

...do you mean Phoenix? as in a firebird? I actually like that more than Poppy. But then, I grew up in a place called Phoenix.. :P

GAH! If you are going to name a child after a place or thing, it has to be spelled right. Pheonix is horrible. Welcome to a life of spell check!!!! Phoenix is a cool mn or last name...not sure I could commit to it as a first name - which is weird, because its a name I should like LOL.

On a side note, one of the teachers at work told me that her hairdresser was really upset because her baby-daddy tattooed their son's name on his neck.......and misspelled it.

Lol, a lot of people misspell it/get the letters mixed up. I live near Phoenix and I STILL have to say "pho(fo)-enix" to make sure I'm spelling it correctly. ^^;

Maybe correct him? Haha, IDK. ^^

I like Phoenix better than I like Poppy - to be completely honest.

But I completely understand how you feel. I've felt like that quite a few times. Once in particular... the boy name was Andrew, the girl name was Rai-anna. They had a boy and named him Andrew Michael. They later had a girl named Michelle Rain. Eh.... better than Rai-anna I suppose.

Probably wouldn't use it myself, but it doesn't make me cringe to see it on others; it's okay, I guess.

Don't really like Poppy, though... =/

Needs to be spelt correctly, but there's nothing else really wrong with it, though it's a tad flash for my tastes. Poppy is too cutesy - fine for an infant but will reach its use-by date well before she's 30...

I guess "old lady names" (Dorothy, Audrey, Olive) are better than "too childish" names since the kids can grow into them. I tend to go for a happy medium - I always liked the name guide which suggested that you picture the name you like in a range of adult uses - for instance, a university degree, a business door, a marriage certificate, and a memorial statue, and if it looks silly on any of them - scrub it.

I like Phoenix a lot (thanks to the Ace Attorney series), but not Pheonix. :/ Poppy is nice too.

My brother, Brandon, was going to be Brandy if he was a girl. I was too young when he was born to have an opinion either way on his name, but if I have been older you'd be sure I would've been pulling for a boy. He dodged a bullet.

Eh. I'm not really a fan of either of them, but that's just me.

My cousin had a baby in August of 2008. 3 months before it was due, she told me that if it were a girl, they were going to name it Braelyn Rose (that's just a guess on the spelling) or Christian Anthony. I hoped and prayed that it would be a boy! Sure enough, she had a boy--but they named him Gaige Anthony instead.

I actually quite like Phoenix. I went to school with a girl named Phoenix, although I like it more for a boy.

My brother's name is Phoenix. We call him Pheeny-Beany for a nick-name, he's just young enough it doesn't bother him. :D

I actually don't mind either name, so long as Phoenix is spelled correctly.

I don't mind Phoenix (for either sex) if it's spelt correctly... Poppy is pretty nice, too.

I'm really not a fan of Phoenix (and especially the misspelled version :P)

Poppy is okay, but I call my grandfather Pop (and Poppy when I was little) and I expect any children would do the same. That could get confusing :P

Not that I would seriously consider using Poppy anyway, as there are a lot more names I like better, but yeah. :P

i love poppy. its on our list.

phoenix (im just going to assume it was an accidental misspelling on his part) is one of those names like raven where, personally, i find it immature and it sounds like two trying too hard teenagers named their child. fine for them, but too bad for the kid who is saddled with it.

My best friend said she's naming her first son Phoenix Orion. I told her I liked Orion as a guilty pleasure (I think it's really cool sounding, but would probably end up using it for my dog), and I asked her why not give him a "normal" (read: not outrageous) first name, and use Phoenix as a middle name.

Her response: "My kids, unlike YOURS, will not be normal."

uh, okay...

Sophia, Harrison, Christian, Dominic, Arielle are names that my husband and I like. I guess we're too normal for her.

I despise Poppy. Phoenix is NMS but I don't think it's that bad.
