i guess i am not seeing the "cultural references" in those names. show me a historically cultural name with apostrophes and random capitalizations.

i think ivy ana, or however one would properly spell that, is fine. i dont even know what a proper spelling would be for shy'mere, maybe just shymere. the aposotrophes are unnecessary any way you look at it. there's nothing "cultural" about apostrophes. and there's nothing fine about X'Athan, imo. it's just made up.

i skimmed a lot of it, but i did read that part. like i said, i didnt see anything about apostrophes being cultural, which is what i was addressing. sorry i couldnt read the first one.

for the record, i think its great when people of different cultures use culturally significant names. i am not convinced, however, that that is the case with every atrocity we see on this board (nor do i ever automatically assume that these children are african-american, it is not something that crosses my mind.)

it's not so much that I assume they're african american, as it is it's frustrating when it seems any name that gets posted with apostrophes automatically gets labeled as "bad". and maybe the names posted here were random names that have no meaning to the mom, but after the 1000th time that I see those kinds of names get teased... it's almost as annoying as "the dash don't be silent"

I see apostrophes as being difficult for the child. Growing up, my last name had a hyphen in it and filling out paperwork was always a hassle. I was almost always addressed as only one of my last name as and not both. Like Miss Zeta or Miss Jones instead of Zeta-Jones for example. Occasionally it would be a problem (especially while traveling) That my paper work did not have a hyphen (because the system could not add them then) while my I.D. did. I'm sure the computer systems now are more advanced though.

but it's not your nor cathrine zeta jones' last name's fault that people can't grasp the concept of apostrophes and hyphens. my hyphenated friend hasn't had issue traveling recently

I know that a lot of government systems are not able to deal with apostrophes so they just get left out or replaced with a space. The two systems we use, only one will let us put in the apostrophes. I would think that in countries with languages that routinely use accent marks and the like, it would be less of a problem.
