I actually really like the name Arwen, and though I think Michelle is a little blah, it flows well together. I can't stand LOTR though, neither the books nor the movies.
I love the name Arwen. I didn't know of it until the LOTR movies, but I don't think it's one of those names that would doom a child forever due to its cultural reference.
I don't mind Arwen...its one of those names that can pass for fantasy or, well, Welsh lol! Michelle doesn't work for me though. I think if they wanted a "normal" middle name, they could have picked something that went better.
I actually knew an Arwen, when I was younger, and her name worked just fine on her. From what I saw, the people who got the reference were fans of the books, generally (and consequently of the name), and those who didn't thought it was a pretty and unusual name.
I love the name Arwen, but I also have a LotR name so I think it would be weird for me to use a LotR name on a child of mine. I'm 24 now, my parents were big fans of the books. My name is more obscure though, and even when the movies were popular not many people got the reference, so when the Arwen you saw in the paper grows up I'm sure she'll be so far removed from the movies that not many people will get the reference. :-)
I quite like Arwen. It's not like they named her Legolas or Frodo Baggins or something incredibly ridiculous (although, I imagine there are some poor sould out there with those names :S)
I'd like to assume "Michelle" would be for her mother, grandmother or significant female in her paren'ts life rather than just a name they liked.
I've always thought Arwen was a lovely name, Eowyn too. I wouldn't hesitate to use either on a pet, especially a horse for Eowyn! I wouldn't personally use it on a child but it could be a whole lot worse.
