I have a big problem with 'THA' names. TabiTHA, AgaTHA, BerTHA. I simply don't like the sound-at all. (Not trying to offend anyone :), Im sure you are still a lovely person despite the fact I dont like your name!) I also know a couple people who don't like -dyn, -den, -don, -dan sounds in names. ie Kaidan, Landon..

Does anyone else have a automatic dislike of names because of a particular sound?

not a sound, but the letter V drives me crazy. I can't stand V names, more for girls than for boys, even very classy ones like Victoria, and I don't know why. Virginia is the only exception. I actually like Virginia a lot.

I usually don't like names with an "ah" or "aw" sound in them. I hate it when Hanna is pronounced Haw-nuh, and I don't like Jocelyn, Robert, Rodney, Roz, Ron, Roxanne.

The exception is names like Audrey and Aubrey. I like those.

The letter X. It doesn't belong in the alphabet or in a name. I just hate the letter in general and I don't think it's pretty in a name.

Actually, in Polish, there is no letter X. So names that would have an X in English are spelled with a "ks" sound - i.e. "Alexandra" is "Aleksandra." And of course, nothing can START with the sound. I like that a lot better.

I'm one of the dyn-den-don-dan loathers - there are a couple of exceptions but by and large I just don't like those names. I also don't like -gan or -son (particularly on girls. That -son suffix means son, just like it says!).

And I also can't stand any variation on Michaela now, having seen so many dreadful versions.

I don't know.. maybe the fact that my Aunt has a dog named Bella may have ruined it for me. I could just never name my daughter Bella. It does not seem like a name for a human being... at least one that could be taken seriously.

Belle isn't bad.. but as a nickname for Isabelle or something only.

There are many, many names that start with "J", "K", and "SH" that I strongly dislike. Of course there are exceptions to the rule but most are big NO.

I often don't like names that end in DEN or DON or DAN or DYN. Maybe because that's what's really trendy now. I also don't like names beginning in S. Don't know why.

I don't like names that sound like something negative, even if they MEAN something positive.

I think Gretchen sounds like "wretched". I think Bella sounds like "belly". Garth sounds too much like barf.

I guess you and I balance each other out then, because I love 'th' names. Tabitha is one of my favorites. I also like 'sh' sounds in the middle or end of names, and same with 'ph' sounds. Daphne, Tabitha, Tavish, Arthur, Delphine... all on my short list.

I do not like names that start with a Br sound. Brooke, Brayden, Brie... And I don't like hard K sounds, like in Jack or Brock.

-aden and -lyn names I'm tired of, but it's not that I find those sounds distasteful... just overused.

My most disliked sound in names is a bit hard to explain...
I don't like the Y sound. But it doesn't have to be a Y that is spelled in there... like for example, I don't like the following names, because they are pronounced (at least in australia) with a Y sound in them:

Matthew = math-Yoo
William = will-Yum
Daniel = dan-Yul
Samuel = sam-Yoo-ul
Nathaniel = nuh-than-Yel

etc.

There are lots of boys' names with that sound in it, but I like almost every traditional boys' name which doesn't have that sound, so it's ok.

I also don't like the letter W in names (so that makes William a really bad name, even though I respect it as a good solid name)

Hmm, yeah Ive never htought about the 'y' sound. I dont li ke any of the names you wrote down, but yeah I cant say I dislike all of them.

Oh, and I don't like Samantha. I love the name Sam though!
