I've completely fallen in love with the name Emily lately, and I'm starting to consider putting it into my list of names I want to use in the future. I know it is sadly enough on the rise at home in Norway, but I just love it so much.
However, I have a second cousin who's daughter is named Emily. Although I've never actually met this little Emily, and I think it's probably at least 15 years since I last saw my second cousin, they send home-made calenders with the pictures of the kids to my grandma every year so it's not like there's absolutely no contact between the families.

Is it stupid of me to want to use the name when I know it's already "in-use" or is it okay to use it?

WDYT?

Sounds fine to me. Go for it : ) And if you ever meet this little Emily, you can tell her that you loved her name so much that you used it for your own daughter.

15 years is a long time... I'd go ahead and use it.

I think it's distant enough that you could use the name!

And it looks like you've fallen in love with Emily from Skins as well!

Emily is not an obscure enough name to have been 'claimed' by any one family member if you're not close and have never met. Emily is top 10, if not top 5 in most countries. It probably will rise in Norway, but if that doesn't bother you then you should definitely go ahead and use it if you love it.

One more thing, the Germanic Emilie is really popular in Norway isn't it? The more unusual spelling might be awkward to live with. I know an Emilie over here where Emily is the go to spelling, would have a hard time with people getting it right.

Just a thought.

I think that's a plenty big enough distance myself.

Emily is at the top of my list for a daughter someday. I have a 3rd cousin (my mom's cousin's daughter) who is named Emily, but I never see her, so I figure it is fine to use.

I'd say its ok to use it, definitely.

I know a German Emilie who pronounces it like Emily. Can you enlighten me, how is it pronounced?
