I work at a summer program at an elementary school and have come across the following...unique names. Discuss.

*these three are all girls, by the way

Lyric (Leer-ick)
Camera (Cam-er-uh)
Kahlan (Kay-lawn)

Lyric is not so unique anymore as I've heard so many people use it.

Honestly I don't like any of them.

Haha, me neither. I sorta like Kahlan, but I'd never use it. I think it's a more common Asian name because her mother's from China or Japan or Korea or something.

"Kahlan" makes me think of "Kaplan Tours" or something... :-/

I like Lyric.

There was a Kahlan (or Kahlen maybe?) on America's Next Top Model a few seasons ago. It's ok.

Camera seems weird to me.

Lyric is still uncommon enough that I haven't grown bored with it. I enjoy hearing that people are named Lyric, although it's not a name I'm inclined to use myself.

i have noticed that this community enjoys the punchy, snarky, "let's see what new and funny way i can come up with to say NMS" kind of comments. it's a little jarring at first!

when I joined and saw my first "copied with my opinions added" list, I thought this was the rudest community ever. Then I joined and did one myself. Now I love it and find myself equally harsh sometimes. LOL.

Camera sounds like the forgot to put the "n" on the end. kahlan is ok, but i would never have guessed that pronnunciation! kalan or kalahn woul've mde more sense (sorry for typos, nursing at keyboard).

I think Lyric is pretty, I never heard of anyone named Lyric. Kahlan is unique, I like it for somebody else, but I wouldn't use that name.

Yeah I've heard Lyric used a lot lately, usually for a boy though. Not my style however.

And the last one is just a bit too out there for me.. I wouldn't even have the first inkling of how to pronounce it if you hadn't put that there.

As someone alluded to above, Kahlan is a character from a best selling book series. I like it based on that (it's a very strong female character), but my husband and pronouce it different ways and that would definitely confuse a child. ;)
I dislike Lyric and Camera, although Camera seems like you could say it with a Spanish accent it maybe it wouldn't sound so bad.

Yes, we'd always pronounced Kahlan with an AH sound, as the spelling suggests, and were flabbergasted to learn that Goodkind says it with an AY. (Then why not spell it that way, I wonder?)

I wondered too, but I prefer the way he says to pronounce it. My husband is the opposite.

Lyric Zachary is my #1 boy name... so I like it... but just for a boy, even though I've heard it for both :)

The daughter of Arthur Ashe is named Camera. I think her mama's a photographer too.

I hate them all. With a passion. And the sad thing is, on first glance I didn't even realize Camera was spelled like, you know... camera. I was thinking of it more of a human's name than an object, but the second time I saw it, my jaw dropped a little. WTF? And I hate the name Lyric. It's so... icky. And I hate that Kahlan is pronounced the way it is. WTF?

I am actually okay with Lyric. Camera is bad, Kahlan doesn't make sense phonetically.
