Would you consider it for a first name, nickname or not at all?
It's growing on me, but I'm not sure about how it's generally perceived.

My first thought is stripper.

My second thought is that someone with that name would have a hard time ever being taken seriously in life.

No, I'd never consider it. And I'm Katherine/Kate but went through high school as "Kat." lol

Honestly, it makes me think of vaginas...I have a rule that I will not give any name that rhymes with or means any body part whatsoever...this especially applies to something as blatant Kitty.

Maybe in a different era it would have been adorable but now it would just be cruel and almost vulgar in my opinion :-/

I knew a Katherine who went by Kitty and she's in her mid-40s. She's pretty respectable so I don't have any of the stripper connotations that others have mentioned. I like it as a nickname.

Nickname. I HATE it. Hate the way it sounds, hate the way it looks, hate the connotations... It's just bad, lol.
It reminds me of a stripper or something. And/or someone not very intelligent/ditzy.

Okay. In theory I think Kitty is a cute nickname for Katherine. HOWEVER at preschool the other day, a prospective family was visiting and the dad said, "Come here, Kitty!" to his daughter in a high pitched voice and I realized that it sounds like you are calling an animal...it seemed incredibly insulting actually. I cringed every time he said the name for the whole class period. It felt...I dunno. Like objectifying/reducing the toddler to the status of pet. I really didn't like it. I don't think it would bother me as much on an older child, although an older child might not like that the local bikini waxer calls her business "Pretty My Kitty." So anyway, to summarize: a fan in theory, but in practice I don't like it at all.

I know a girl whose full first name is Katie, and she goes by Kit. I always thought it was silly- Katie's a great name, and Kit is just kinda "blah."

Anyway, Kitty would be too bad if it was short for Katrina/Katherine/along those lines, but it reminds me of the mom on That 70's Show.

I've always thought Kitty was adorable as a nn for Katherine, though I wouldn't use it on its own. Of course my mind goes for Pride & Prejudice rather than vulgar sland, in fact I was not aware of any slang meaning until I read the other comments.
