Jul. 5th, 2006 04:03 pmI know people feel really strongly about names, as do I, and I'm just wondering, do you have a list of names you'd never use? What about ones you'd CONSIDER using, but only if your future/current SO refuses to use the names you really like? Well, I have one and thought I'd share:
Girls
Definite Firsts: there are really long stories behind these three names and why they mean something to me, but all of the first names I have picked out for my future kids has some sort of meaning behind it other than "I like it".
Julianna (Jules)
Olivia (Liv)
Amelia (Mia/Amy)
Middles Only: (I think of MNs as a way to honor friends/family and/or name a child after a hero without going overboard and naming your kid John Fitzgerald Kennedy Hayes or something like that).
Lillian - I don't really like the idea of naming girls after flowers, but I plan on using this middle name to "honor" (I guess?) my best friend
Rose - Same; I plan on using to honor another very close friend
Judith - Love the name, but I don't like the nickname Judy and Judith seems awful long for a little girl.
Eleanor - Love it and would like to use it to honor Eleanor Roosevelt (one of my heroes)
Cady - Love it, but I have a friend with this name who is constantly having it misspelled/mispronounced. It would be in honor of Elizabeth Cady Stanton.
Margaret - Don't particularly love the name, but it's my grandmother's and I would love to honor her with that.
Beth - After a family friend who died a few years ago
Love, but wouldn't use
Siddalee (Sidda) - Love! this name, but I would never use it. It seems a bit...much. But I really do love it.
Autumn - I love this one, but I refuse to name my kids after days/months/seasons, so it's out. Besides, it totally makes me think of a hippy or something.
Evelyn - Like it, but I had a crazy great-aunt named this and all I can think of is her.
Hope - Love it, but I don't want to name my kids Hope/Faith/Charity/etc. because what if she grows up to be really pessimistic? I'd love her anyway, but naming her Hope is saying something about her personality that I don't know yet.
Rebekkah (Bekki) - absolutely LOVE this name and this spelling of it, but my middle name is Rebecca and I'd never name my kid after myself.
Victoria - Love it but I hate the name Vicky and Victoria's too much for a kid.
Would Never Use
Coco - Reminds me of a pet or something.
Ashley - It's OK as a boys' name, but it's kinda...blah.
Kayleigh/any variation - Too cutsey and trendy for me
Emma - same, plus I just can't stand this name
Carissa - I know two girls with this name who are incredibly annoying
Charlotte - Just not my style
Kelly - Ugh. Bitchy people from high school ruined this name for me. I think I've only met one Kelly I actually liked.
Alyssa - Too cutesy/trendy
Alison/variants - same ^
Chloe - Same as Coco
Cleo - same as Coco/Chloe
Dawn - Times of day bug me, too.
Summer - No seasons/months/day names
Faith/Charity - See explanation for Hope. Plus I really hate these two.
Kelsey - Too cutesy/trendy, plus it was already taken by a cousin
Katelyn - Same as Kelsey
Might Consider (I like all of these names, but I want my kids' names to mean something more to me than they sounded good. That's why I picked the three I definitely want to use. I'd use these if for some reason my future SO has a problem with those. Although my first daughter is going to be Jules. End of story.)
Danielle (Dani)
Caroline
Shannon
Alexandra (Alex)
Carrie
Miranda
Samantha (Sam)
Sarah
Jordan
Boys
Definite Firsts
Charles (Charlie) - one of my favorites, also after my great-grandfather
Luke - one of my favorites, also love the meaning "bringer of light"
Liam - one of my favorites, also love the meaning "unwavering protector"
Middles Only
Atticus - I love this name and the connotation it has with it (thanks to To Kill a Mockingbird), but I wouldn't name my kid this as a first name
Brian - I don't LOVE the name, but I do really like it. I'd use it as a middle name to honor of my closest friends who is an absolutely amazing person and who has qualities I'd want my child to have
Michael - LOVE this name, but it's my brother's and I don't want to name my kids after a living relative as their first name. So middle it is. Probably with Charlie.
James - I like the name, but I hate the nicknames that go with it and James is too formal for a kid, so I'd only use it as a middle
Timothy - don't particularly like the name, but it's my dad's
Otto - I have a love/hate relationship with this name, but it's a family name and I'd consider using it as a middle.
Isaac - Love it, but a little too...something. I don't know. I just can't picture giving my kid this name as his first.
Love/like, but wouldn't use
Aiden/Aidan - WAY too trendy for me, plus not really my style
Robin - Love it, but I have several FEMALE relatives with this name and therefore my family associates it with girls
Henry - Love it, but too formal/old fashioned sounding
Marcus - same
River - haha, I fucking love this name but it's SOOO weird and I wouldn't name my kid that
Orion - same with this one
Brennan - Love it, but I think it might sound weird as a first name and there'd be no nicknames for it
Walker - same
Josiah - Love it, but I feel the same about this one as I do about Isaac
Joel - Like it, but don't love it enough to use
Elliot - Love it, but if I name my daughter Olivia, I don't really want to have a whole Law & Order: SVU theme going on here
Anthony - Like it, but I have a cousin named this and it's really popular I've noticed
Brady - Like it, but it's too unisex for me (I like names that are clearly boy or clearly girl)
Caleb - Like it, but not enough to use
Derek - Like it, but too modern and trendy-sounding for me
Jeremiah - Same as with Isaac/Josiah
Rocky - Haha, I love it, but I would NEVER name my kid this
Would NEVER use
Richard - Ugh, I hate the nicknames that go with this. Except Rick. But it just strikes me as such an old-man name
Christian - It's OK, but there's just something about this name that bugs me
Malachi - This name bugs me for some weird reason
Mark - I can't stand this name. It's way too...I don't know. I just don't like it.
Justin - Too trendy. I know way too many people in my generation named this, and while I know that it won't
be when I have kids, I still hear it way too much.
Lee - Too boring, even for a middle name.
Gerry/Jerry - crazy uncle ruined it, but I didn't like it to begin with
Austin - Too trendy
Brandon - I've only met one Brandon I've ever liked, so I just think negatively of this one
Cameron - Just don't like it...at all.
Dylan - Ugh, same as Cameron. I hate this name.
Cliff - Too pro-wrestler sounding to me
Scott - Too popular in my generation
Travis - same, plus I don't like it anyway
Gavin - I don't know...there's just something about it that makes me not want to name my kid that.
Would Consider

Max
Matthew (Matt)
Benjamin (Ben)
