[identity profile] dararachel.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
Hi there name experts! I am pregnant with baby #3 and would like some name suggestions if possible! I'm not finding out the sex, though I have a feeling about it being a girl. I have a girl and a boy already and their names are Gabriella Devorah (Gabbie) and Zachary Elan. We are Jewish and the names need to be at least somewhat Jewish in origin - both my kids have Hebrew names that match their English names (Gavriella and Zachariah) - and their middle names are Hebrew / Israeli without the English translation.

Now, for this child, I would like to name him / her after my grandmother whose name was Selma (Hebrew name Sarah) and Uncle whose name was Jack (Hebrew name Yankel / Yaakov). I don't want to use the name Sarah because it sort of rhymes with my name (Dara) and I can't use Jack because it rhymes with Zach (even though we don't call him that) and plus my last name ends with -off and I don't think it's a good idea! So I'm looking for other S and J (or Y) names. For a girl, I really like Sabrina and I'm thinking Sabrina Yakira right now. For a boy, my husband likes Jacob, but it's just so common! All I can think of is Samuel Jacob or Jacob Samuel, but I don't even really like Samuel, and plus that doesn't follow the pattern of a Hebrew middle name - it would have to be Jacob Shmuel or Samuel Yaakov.

My husband tends to be picky about names and I'd love to have a bunch of ideas to present him with, so fire away! Thanks!

I love the name Adah for a girl. It is a Hebrew name that means adornment. My favorite name that is Hebrew for a boy is Ishmael which means God will hear. I also like Iram, Isaac, and Jonathan (All Hebrew origin.)

I actually don't think it does have an English version. It's eventually the contracted version Yehoram (with a couple of different names in between) and it's just a giant circle of Hebrew names.

I love the names Jonathan and Jesse, along with Jeremy which, according to behindthename.com, is a form of Jeremiah. Some S-name ideas are Saul, Simon (although I prefer the Hebrew version, Shimon) and Samson.

I'm not a big fan of Sabrina Yakira; it sounds pretty clunky, and while I do love most Hebrew names, Yakira just looks ugly. Some alternative ideas are Jael/Yael and Yehudit.

Okay slightly off topic, but my last name is Russian Jewish ending in -off... Do you get "Oh, like Smirnoff?" a lot? Because I do.

Anyway, here are some of my suggestions...
Girls:
Sarit, Suri, Tzeitel (all of which are beautiful Hebrew names related to Sarah)
Sadie used to be a nickname for Sarah but is accepted as a name in its own right
Adara ("noble" and Sarah means "lady" or "princess")
Adina
Atarah (means "crown")
Channah/Hannah
Dalia
Eliana
Liora
Jacqueline (for your uncle)

Boys:
Jacob (Americanization of Yaakov, similar to Jack)
John or a related name (http://www.behindthename.com/php/related.php?name=john) since Jack was once a nickname for John.
Brendan (means "prince" Sarah is "princess")

All I know is that Ezra is like one of my ALL TIME favorite names.

One of my Hebrew professors was named Sura, (SURR-uh, not SOU-rah), a variant of Sarah, and I always thought it was lovely. And Sadie is nice too.
I adore Jacob as well, but it just seems to common to me! Noam is probably my favorite Hebrew name, but alas it sounds dreadful with my surname.

In general, my favorite Hebrew names are:
Benjamin, Judah, Asher, Adam, Isaac, Ezra, Samuel, Noam, Oren, Ari, Zev, Zvi.
Tziporah, Dalia, Ayelet, Yael, Orli, Leah, Aviva, Leona, Naomi, Tamar, Miriam.

This is kind of a stretch, but what about Jessica? In Hebrew that's Yiscah, which is said to be another name for Sarah...and the J could be for naming after Jack as well.
