[identity profile] clutterbang.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
So my second son was born one week ago today. We named him Che, which we like because it means friend. It's one syllable like his big brother, Fin Diego. So, I want a three-syllable middle name for Che, too. We're not specifically fussed with South American names (or associated, actually), it just kind of turned out that way. We wanted to take a bit of time to pick a good ethnicity for the name, but then we also want to register his birth already so we have to pick something. Which brings me to our other problem.. we want to choose a new last name for our family rather than perpetuating the status quo and going with the name Jason's grandfathers have been dragging around for the last however long. No idea what direction I want to go in though, maybe something earthy? Hmm, have you ever heard an 'earthy' last name?
Suggestions wanted, these are our names (not too concerned with matching up our middles than our kids);

Jason (William)
Naomi (Dianne)
Fin Diego
Che

I really don't want to be bound by borders either.

it's not three syllables but the fist name that popped into my head with that first name was Marcus.

Ahhh, he is precious!

I kind of like Che Oliver.

However, I am terrible that the middle name thing, because I can't think of many middle names to go along with my own names :/

For last names I actually love the surname traditions of the middle ages....naming for physical characteristics or occupation or place of residence. In my ancestry there are a lot of Underwoods and I like the idea of my family living in a cottage tucked underneath some big trees. Perhaps you can look to your family history: where you met or first lived, things that brought you together, and extrapolate from there. Alternatively you could take a name from something you both love...a historical figure or someone/something/somewhere you particularly admire. My husband is a fan of the Cuban chess player Capablanca, for example. Or a word/meaning you like and look it up in other languages. My last name Avis, for example, means bird in Latin. In German it would be Vogel. In Czech it would be Pták. In Spanish Pájaro, and so on. Or you could get whimsical... I've known someone with the last name Beanblossom and that has always struck me as a particularly lilting and fun surname. I don't know why she changed her name when she got married!

Agreed, I love the idea of choosing your last name based on where you met, or after a figure you both admire.
