Roman?

I'm due in June with a son who will be named Asher Roman(?) Sheffield. Asher is definite. Since I have chosen the first name, I would like to let my husband decide the middle name. He has recently fallen in love with the name Roman. It's never been on my top 10, but it's better than his other ideas (Achilles, Romeo, Cassius, lol.) So, what do you guys think of Roman? Also, please suggest other middle names that my husband might like. He wants something strong, masculine, and uncommon. Thanks in advance.

ETA: Thank you all so much for your opinions, but I wanted add that the issue of repetition has already been discussed in this entry and the general consensus was that it isn't too horrible. For what it's worth, we would not be using "Ash" as a nickname. Keep the suggestions coming! :)

It does seem like it would be a little hard to say "Asher Sheffield" with the repetition of the SH sound.

I don't have a problem with Roman for a middle name, but I'd take note of the initials. His initials would be ARS with that name.

As for more middle name suggestions, it sounds like your husband likes mythology inspired names.

Apollo - It is of Greek origin, and its meaning is "destroyer". Mythology: the Greek and Roman god of light, music, and poetry, who drives the sun across the sky in a carriage, and also rules over healing and prophecy, speaking through the famous oracle at Delphi. The name comes from Appollyon, Greek translation of the Hebrew word "abaddon", meaning "destroyer".
Ares - the god of war, and one of the lovers of Aphrodite, goddess of beauty.
Griffin - In Greek mythology and medieval legend, the Gryphon was a fierce creature with the foreparts of an eagle (hence the hooked nose) and the hindquarters of a lion.
Orion - Orion was a mighty hunter, the son of Poseidon, who was turned into a constellation.
Caspian - Place name: the Caspian Sea is the largest inland body of water in the world, lying between Russia and Asia, and its southern coast is in Iran. Author C.S. Lewis named a principal character Caspian in one of his "Chronicles of Narnia". "Give me a sword, and I will prove in combat with any man that I am Caspian, son of Caspian, King of Narnia and Emperor of the Lone Islands."

ARS means "art" in latin (as in the saying "Ars longa, vita brevis"...Art is long, life is short). I think it's a nice set of initials really. I guess you are thinking "arse" like the British slang?

You're welcome! It's Hippocrates if you are curious about who wrote it. :) He meant art in terms of skill/craft rather than fine art but it reads well both ways.

I like Roman. I'm not a big fan of Asher. I know I'm the only one here who isn't.

I like Asher and I don't think it's too "shh shh" with your last name. Roman is not my favorite; I understand why you're looking for a substitute.

Asher Aurelio Sheffield
Asher Boaz Sheffield
Asher Peregrine Sheffield
Asher Perseus Sheffield
Asher Corin Sheffield
Asher Orlando Sheffield
Asher Duncan Sheffield
Asher Fabian Sheffield (to snag a name from another recent post!)
Asher Benedict Sheffield
Asher Lennox Sheffield
Asher Orion Sheffield

There's a Roman in one of our playgroups. He's a nice little chap (aged about 2) and that may be part of why I like the name.
