I love Miriam and had it on the list my husband and I are currently compiling, until a friend pointed out that it means something like bitter or sorrow or some other unpleasantness like that, so we scrapped it. Meanings can be a deal breaker for me, but otherwise, it's a great name. I used to teach a Miriam who went by Mim.
From what I've heard there are two different definitions of Miriam! The more common one is that Miriam is a diminutive form of Mary, hence the bitterness and sorrow meaning. The second meaning is "songbird" because Miriam (the sister of Moses and Aaron) occasionally became the voice for Moses, as well as sang a lot in the Torah. (I've only heard the second definition voiced in mostly Jewish naming boards, however.)

Donna is just .. ew to me. I can't picture that name on a little girl AT ALL.
Mae is pretty, but it always seems more of a middle name to me.
