my boyfriend and i went on a saturday drive this past weekend and drove all around this camp that he and his dad used to go to (and still do sometimes) and all of the roads had very unique names. one, Ira, that i reaaaaaally liked, he didnt. then i saw another that i really liked, Ellis...both for a female, of course. what do you guys think about both??

Date: 2010-01-26 06:32 pm (UTC)I could see Ellis (I suppose it's more common in Dutch to use that version on women than it is in English), but I like Alice so much better! It looks more graceful, somehow. But maybe that's just me.

Date: 2010-01-26 09:54 pm (UTC)As for Ira--yes, it is traditionally a male name. However, I think many members of this community should keep in mind that a lot of other female names--Lindsay, Hailey, Shirley, Ashley, to name a few--were once strictly masculine, as well. With the -a sound on the end of it, Ira could very well pass as a feminine name, especially since the name itself is largely unknown these days. At the very least, it's not nearly as bad as naming your daughter a name that manes "Son of Kenneth!"
