my boyfriend and i went on a saturday drive this past weekend and drove all around this camp that he and his dad used to go to (and still do sometimes) and all of the roads had very unique names. one, Ira, that i reaaaaaally liked, he didnt. then i saw another that i really liked, Ellis...both for a female, of course. what do you guys think about both??

I agree!

I don't have an uncle Ira but I have a Grandpa Ira.

omg I always felt that Ira was an old, Jewish man's name too, but that's probably because the only person I know with that name fits that description. I didn't want to say that though, because I don't want to come across as someone who stereotypes people.

Exactly. I went to school with someone named Ira. He was tall and had red hair, so that's who I see when I see the name Ira. Ellis Island comes to mind every time I see Ellis... or the character in Die Hard.

I see Ira as an old Jewish man name too.

I dislike Ira for either sex and I know a baby boy named Ellis. They're both traditionally male names, so I would prefer Ella or Eleanor on a girl.

Ira is a boys name and I like it but wouldn't use it. Ellis sounds like a last name/the island and I wouldn't use it.

ellis is one of my favorites for either sex.

i've only ever heard ira used as a male name...and usually only on elderly men, so i cannot see it used for a little girl at ALL.

i don't really like ellis. maybe as a middle name...it sounds more like a last name to me. (or an island...)

I really like Ira, but for a boy. It doesn't feel like an old man name to me.. it feels fresh, like maybe it will be revived soon.

I think Ellis is really cute for a little girl!

Wait, wait, wait... both for female? Of course? Those are definitely male names...

I like Ira, though :) But not Ellis

LOL, this was exactly what went through my head "Female... of course? No, those are definitely male names! There is no 'of course' in this scenario."

me three (or, five) on this. theyre both male names.

im not a big fan of ellis. i like ira a lot, but i love jewish names.

Agreed with above posted, Ira is definitely in the old Jewish guy category, although I think it could be fresh on the right little BOY. For a girl, sorry. Myra, Moira, or Mira are similar but feminine. I don't hate Ellis but I don't like it either because it sounds like a last name rather than a first name. I prefer Ellen for a girl and Elliot for a boy. Hollis is a similar but underused girl name, if you like the -is ending.

I think they're both nice names on boys, but not girls.

I love Ira for a boy, actually. It's too masculine for me to see it on a girl.

I could see Ellis (I suppose it's more common in Dutch to use that version on women than it is in English), but I like Alice so much better! It looks more graceful, somehow. But maybe that's just me.

NMS, but they're both boy names.

Ira is definitely for a male. Please don't do that to a girl.

Ellis was the name of a girl I knew in college, she really liked her name!

Ira and Ellis, I think it's the opposite of obvious that those would be girl names. I don't care for Ira at all, Ellis is okay, on boys.

Ellis strikes me as being a very masculine name, too--but moreso than that, a surname. I'm not a huge fan of using surnames as first names (Jackson, Harrison, MacKenzie, and so on) so I don't really like it.

As for Ira--yes, it is traditionally a male name. However, I think many members of this community should keep in mind that a lot of other female names--Lindsay, Hailey, Shirley, Ashley, to name a few--were once strictly masculine, as well. With the -a sound on the end of it, Ira could very well pass as a feminine name, especially since the name itself is largely unknown these days. At the very least, it's not nearly as bad as naming your daughter a name that manes "Son of Kenneth!"

Ira is one of my top names for a boy and I think it's long due for a resurgence (I may be biased due to Ira Glass) but I don't really like it for a girl. Ellis is all right.

Ira is a Russian girls name.
It's short for Irina and pronounced like E RAH.
