[identity profile] lower-class.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I saw these names on a Christmas card yesterday

Cade (m)
Kynan (m)
Brogan (m)
Adarah (m)

The parents had names like Carrie and Dave....something like that, I don't remember exactly.

I looked the names up (on babynames.com) because I had never heard 3 of them before.

Cade is English and means Stout, Sturdy
Kynan is Welsh and means Hound. Originally a surname
Brogan is Irish and means Badger
Adarah is Greek and means Beauty

I don't trust babynames.com at all... I tend to go to books I know are reliable and behindthename.com where the names have to be researched before they make it on the site.

Cade: From a surname which was originally derived from a nickname meaning "round" in Old English.

Kynan is not a name, it maybe a misspelled version of a surname though... or a just straight up surname, not a given name.

Brogan: Derived from Gaelic brĂ³g "shoe" combined with a diminutive suffix. This was the name of several Irish saints, including Saint Patrick's scribe.

Adarah is a misspelled version of Adara or Adhara, both of feminine use, meaning noble and maidens respectively. I can't think of any name off of the top of my head that mean "beauty" in Greek for the male form... but maybe a God or Demigod but I am too lazy to pull out the encyclopedia According to my closest two encyclopedias there is no God or Demigod by the name Adarah. Just in case though I did take a sec to pull out the greek-english dictionary and the two words I found for beauty are kalloni and omorfia.

So the moral to the story is that babynames.com sucks for finding the true meaning of a name AND that parents really should research meanings themselves if they truly matter to them... look through certifiable books, and just do a bit of research if these kinds of things matter to you.

reposted to fix my grammar and make all that understandable.

Exactly. I drives me crazy that there are so many sources with incorrect etymological information.
