first you have heard of what? im not making some huge announcement about it. i just think its a stupid name. its my opinion. it doesnt sound like a real name and looks like multiple names smooshed together to form one "trendee" one, similar to xander in some ways.
and gavin i have always thought was just flat out ugly.
I think I like Gavin slightly better. Evander is very tied with Evander Holyfield so I feel that giving the name to my own child (destined to be a skinny white nerd) is probably not the best idea. I think Gavin is more likely to be popular (already is popular) because Evander is dragged down by the Holyfield reference. For every parent that would choose it because of the boxer, there are 10 who don't choose it for the same reason. Gavin is a little more tame and accessible.
Yeah, I'm aware of the boxer, but all I know about him is from reading his wikipedia page, which isn't bad.
Would those people not chose Evander because synonymous with someone else, or because its synonymous with Holyfield in particular? (Did he do something bad that I haven't heard about?)
i think it's just that the name is now synonymous with him and all his attributes: big, african american, athletic, mustached, etc. he was the guy that mike tyson bit too, so there's the whole ear thing associated with him. i think it's a name kind of like elvis (except maybe not quite so widely known), where a kid given the name has a certain image held up to him.
I had never really heard of Evander and upon some research I found that it's interesting but very easily confused with something made up and/or trendy. I don't know... kind of makes me think of Leander or something... not too keen on it and Gavin is already pretty popular but I have always loved the name and I'll probably use it as a middle name for a child.
I like Gavin more. I like the name Evan (it's my best friend's name), but not Evander. It makes me think of Evander Holyfield, and I really hate boxing. Gavin, on the other hand, makes me think of Gavin Rossdale, who is made of awesome. I think Gavin is/will be more popular.
I like Gavin. I do think it is (and will stay) more popular than Evander, but popularity has never been a "deal-breaker" for me. I think Evander sounds like you're trying to hard to be different. What's wrong with Evan?
I LOVE Evander, with the nn Evan. I came across it when reading the Inheritance series (Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr) and felt it was a funky variation of my great grandma's name (Evelyn).
I'm not a fan of Gavin, but I hear a lot of people starting to like it more and more these days. I think it will be the one to become more popular.

Date: 2010-01-19 02:22 am (UTC)i think evander is more likely to gain in popularity because its far dumber and that seems to be what people are going for these days.

Date: 2010-01-19 02:38 am (UTC)It is indeed a real name, its Greek meaning "good man", it just hasn't been on the SSA list since 1895.
Thanks for your input. :)

Date: 2010-01-19 05:02 am (UTC)That said, Gavin has been pretty steady for a few years, whereas I've seen Evander pop up pretty recently. So there's that.
Evander just sounds like someone smashed Alexander and Evan together. Ick.
