[identity profile] nederlandergirl.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

These names are from Nameberry.com's list "Names of the Future." They are names that, though still not that popular, are rapidly climbing the charts. Here, I'll list them and offer some commentary. Please discuss!

ANAIS    (I particularly like the literary connotations of this name.)

ANASTASIA   Nice royalty connotation, but a little too chunky for my taste.

ANNABEL

ANWEN

ARDEN    Very pretty. I bet it's going to be extremely popular.

AURELIA

BRONWYN

BRYONY    Atonement!

CALLA

CALLIOPE

CARYS

CECELIA

CLEO     Also very cute, and less daring than Cleopatra.

CORDELIA     I remember that Anneof Green Gables adored this name. She would love knowing it's going to be popular!

DAPHNE     I'm torn. Don't like the '80s connotation but do like the mythology.

DELPHINE

DIXIE

EDITH    LOVE it. I'm a huge fan of Grey Gardens and this name makes me think of crumbling mansions and quirky style.

ELIANA     My name's Ilana, so this makes me a little happy.

ELOISE

ESTELLE

EVER    It's one of my favourite names.

FLEUR      Too prissy.

GAIA    I really like it, but it's not for the faint of heart.

GREER

GRETA

HELENA

ISOLDE     One of my favourites. So beautiful and classy.

JEMIMA     Can't say I like Jemina.

KETURAH

KIKI     I don't this name is all that great.

LARK

LAVINIA    Still too old-fashioned.

MAMIE     I just don't think I'll ever find this name attractive.

MILLA

MIRABELLA     Following the Isabella trend, but would do well to be shortened. It's a bit too frlilly.

NEVE

PERSEPHONE    Nice, but clunky.

PIPER     Cute,

PIPPA

REMI

SASKIA   I like it.

SELA

SLOANE

VERITY      Love this name.

VERONICA      Another 80s redux.

WREN     Remember Even Stevens?

Boys

ARCHER    Too phonetically harsh for my taste.

BEAU

BECKETT         Very 1980s Yuppie.

CALLUM

CALVIN    Phonetically beautiful. I reallu like it.

CASPIAN

CORMAC

DEXTER

ELLIOT

GAVIN

HUGO   This is an amazing name.

KIERAN

LACHLAN     This is very nice.

LENNON        Reminds me of Adam Pascal's son.

OTTO

REMY      A rare female-to-male gender switch?

RUFUS

SILAS   I like it.

STELLAN      Nice.

XAVIER

I am happy to see my great grandma's name on there, Edith. I probably would have used the name as a first or middle name myself, but my aunt beat me to it with her second daughter.

I hope Cordelia doesn't get popular. It's my absolute favorite name. :(

For once I actually agree with one of these 'what names are going to be popular' things. There are some I just can't see getting trendy (Jemima?) but for the most part... yeah. Some of them are already up there.

But Remy was never a female name, as far as I know...

Arden
Cecelia
Cleo
Helena*
Jemima*
Pippa*
Neve*
Caspian
Elliot
Hugo
Lennon
Otto*
Silas

Asterisk ones are on my list already. I absolutely love Neve and Pippa, but Jemima is so great as well. I don't believe Jemima is going to rise in popularity though, simply because of its connotations (in the US).

Because spell-check is a good test of whether or not a name is "real".

Annabelle
Arden
Bryony
Cordelia (one of my favorites!)
Daphne
Lavinia
Verity
Wren

Archer
Caspian
Elliott
Gavin
Lachlan

My cousin and his girlfriend are planning to name their son Silas (due in a month or two). Most of the family is being conspicuously, politely silent. Personally, I kind of like it-- mostly due to Neil Gaiman's "The Graveyard Book"!

There was Remy Buxaplenty on Fairly OddParents. He was male.

I think Jemima is on the list because it's popular in the UK. It doesn't have the "Aunt Jemima" connotation there that it does here. Often names get popular in Europe before the cross over to the US. However, I agree with you that Jemima isn't going to be able to shake the syrup lady image here so I doubt it will get very popular!

This is a great list I think. I already know a four year old Cleo and babies Edith and Persephone. My three year old nephew's mn is Elliot. I have also heard a lot of people talking about Cordelia, Dexter, and Archer lately.

if you ever plan for your child to come even close to a finnish-speaking person, don't even consider naming them keturah or persephone. i beg you not to.

my niece is called jemina and i think it's a really pretty name (she's 8 this year), but we pronounce it differently, as yeh-mee-nuh.

Saskia is actually pretty common in the Netherlands, Germany, and other countries in that area of Europe. I LOVE it and plan on using it on one of my children one day.

Like:
Annabel - I'm shocked it isn't more popular. I think Annabelle is a more popular spelling.
Bronwyn
Bryony - Really surprised this hasn't caught on either. I like it better spelled Briony, even though that's not how the flower is spelled.
Edith - LOVE. It's only like the most adorable name ever, and I can't believe it's not right up there with Evelyn.
Eloise - Was never a huge fan until I "met" a one year old girl Eloise, who is adorable and makes me totally able to picture this on a little girl now.
Greer
Isolde
Jemima - But as a GP only. No way this could ever really be used in the US because of the syrup and racial connotation.
Keturah - Never was a huge fan of this, either, but I've been coming around. It reminds me of blue open skies and a nice breeze.
Mamie - Soooo adorable. I'd use it as an occasional nn for Margaret, which is what we'll name our first daughter.

Beau
Callum - It's crazy popular elsewhere and would fit right in in the US, so this one's always really surprised me.
Cormac - I really like it, but it has such an unfortunate meaning. I'm sure that's why it isn't more common.
Dexter - So nerdy and tweed wearing-ly cool. I can see it getting pretty hipster.
Elliot
Hugo
Kieran - I prefer Ciaran, and am surprised neither are more common.

I really do agree with the majority of these-- that they will be/you'd think they would be more popular than they are.

ANASTASIA (LOVE this, not sure if I'd ever actually use it, but it is on my list.)
BRONWYN (Prefer the Brownwen spelling though.)
CARYS (Really starting to grow on me.)
EDITH (Same with this one.)
ELIANA
EVER (Only ever known male Ever's, but still cute.)
FLEUR (I really like it for the Harry Potter connection... I'd consider it as a middle name.0
HELENA (Like it.)
SASKIA (One of my top names)
SLOANE (Growing on me)

Boys
CASPIAN (Prefer it spelled Kaspian, but I love it.)
CORMAC (Don't like this one, especially fro the Harry Potter association lol)
KIERAN (Not sure how I feel about this one)
STELLAN (I actually like this one)

My piano teacher (and mentor's) name was Mamie, which I'd always planned to use probably as a middle name for a girl because I loved my piano teacher and it is not very common. It better not get very popular!

And, I thought the same thing when I read Cordelia :)

There's not many I like on this list.

Lavinia is my Nan's middle name and as such has been on my list for a while, so that's the exception.

Other than that, I like Anwen, Helena and Neve (I would use the Irish spelling though, I just can't happen to remember it right now.)

For boys I like Elliot ... and that's about it.
