[identity profile] mockingbirdq.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I'm currently expecting my second child and would like to name it after my father, whose name was Ellis.

My late father HATED his name his entire life and made me promise not to name any boy after him (He claimed most of his childhood was spent being taunted as "Alice" by other boys, and switched to "Mike" when he hit college.)

However, I would love to honor his memory by using a feminine form of his name if this baby is a girl. So far my DH and I are considering Ella, Elisa or Elise as possible names. Are there any girl names we're missing that are similar to Ellis? And what are your opinions of them?

Thanks,
-MQ

i hate to say it but, alice?

other than alice and the ones you listed, pretty much any el- name could work...

eleanor
elodie
ellie

i like ella and ellie a lot.

thought to add elsa to the list too, since you like ella.

also, elisabeth.

ellis itself could work on either gender, imo.

I'm partial to Elisa (my mom's name) and Elise (my sister's middle name) but I had a friend in college named Ellis and she LOVED her name ;-)

I have a great colleague named Elise and I love that name.

If you want to do something less similar, Eleanor, Elaine, Elizabeth, Eliza?

I like Ella the best of the ones you've listed. Every Elise/Elyse I've ever known was a b***h. Seriously, all of them. Some other El- names:
Elena (my middle, so I'm partial)
Eleanor
Ellen
Ellie
Eloise
Elsa

Ellisa
You already have the single l form, but this one is even closer :p

Although, I can't imagine honoring his wish to not name someone after him by naming someone after him, regardless of the gender.

Ah. I see. Okay.

It was my grandfather's name.

Of the ones you've listed, I like Ella the best.
I don't really like any "El" names, though. =/

I know a woman named Ellis. I like it - I would just use the original name.

Ditto this! I think Ellis is a really fresh name for a girl.

...Ellis isn't a girl name?

I really like Ellis for a girl. I see you've already said in the comments that you don't know if your mum would be comfortable with it but if she is then I would just go for the original name :)

elis (with one l) is a girl's name where i live. we speak portuguese, so i see why it's different. i think elis (or ellis) would make a lovely name for a girl, as someone said above, a fresh name!

I swear, when I posted Ellis hardly anyone liked it. geez.

anyway. while I normally dislike male names on females, I think Ellis is feminine enough to be okay. also, Emily Bronte went by Ellis Bell when she published Wuthering Heights. while that is not your reason for the name, I think it's cool. I can't think of any other names, but Ellis is my top choice! then Alice, I like the humor in it. but it would be strange to name your daughter what your dad was taunted with.

I don't necessary advocate this because I am not a fan of my cousins' baby names in general, but one of my cousins has a daughter named after family who they just straight-up named Ellison. They call her Ellie, though (which I love).

I don't like this name because it's like Madison only worse to me, but I thought it might be useful to you. Of the suggestions already posted, I like Elise, Elodie, Ellen and Eloise.
