I've been afraid to post our top picks for fear of starting a new trend. Through a miracle we agreed on a name for a girl, it's perfect. My other half wants a completely unique name for a boy, it's important to me that it been versatile in romance languages.
Please be brutally honest with his top picks for today, I'm not sure of the spelling but here they are:
Trail
Cabel
Ledge

-not Ledger

My fabulous childless uncle is named Builder and DH agreed to this name, I'm happy with it as a backup and it's easy to pronounce and spell in French!

I agree with spork_zilla. I think they're basically just nouns that sound masculine and I can't see them as names. If I had to pick one it would probably be Ledge, but I really don't care for any of them, sorry.

To be honest, they sound like you're trying too hard to be 'original' and ending up just a bit desperate...

And Trail and Ledge - their playmates will tease them cruelly (and others judge them harshly... for 80 odd years, remember). It's like naming a child Plank, thumpingly 'this-is-a-thing-not-a-person'.

I don't really like any of them, unfortunately.

My suggestion to you would be to go to a used book store and find an older baby name book that may feature names no longer used with any detectable frequency. A newer book I would also recommend is "The Baby Name Wizard" by Laura Wattenberg. In the back, she has several sections that would probably help you to find a good name, such as "Why not?"- a section with perfectly nice names that have somehow been passed over by the trendy parents. For boys this includes:
Alden, Barrett, Bram, Callum, Duncan, Everett, etc.

Maybe I'm being slow, but I don't see how any of these names would work in romance languages...

I thought the same...

They sound like names the Palin's would select.

This was my first thought too.

Yeah, that's also what I thought.

Alright, you asked! I honestly would laugh if I met a person with any of those names. They're just random words. It seems totally ridiculous to use a random word as a name to me. Sorry. :/

Yeah, a little too Palin-y for me. TBH I don't think Ledger is bad. I think of Heath Ledger, so it sounds like a name to me. Ledge, Trail and [Cable], not so much.

I read it as "CAH-belle" instead of "CAY-bel" but I'm still not sure if I like it. My husband's name is Caleb and sometimes people typo it as Cable.

These are not names. These are random nouns.

I don't think there's any fear of these becoming a trend. Really, don't worry.

Please remember you are naming a person. Would you want to walk around your whole life being called Cable? And I mean really reflect on that for more than 5 minutes. It smacks of trying too hard.

for some reason I like Ledge, but probably because I don't know what it means.
Builder is kind of ridiculous, I'm sorry.
It reminds me of house builders, or body builders.
And I'm also not sold on the french pronunciation (Bewl-DER?)

I hate them, to be honest.

What about Mason?

I actually know a Cabel. It's an old family surname and since his brother is McNair and his sisters are Cameron and Lytch, I think he got one of the worst of the bunch. (Although Lytch has the unfortunate rhyming problem)

He pronounces it Cab (as in taxi)- l

Honestly, these names are going to get made fun of a lot. What about Archer or Hunter if you like Builder? I know a guy named Stone and it actually suits him and isn't as bad as ledge or trail...

What about Clint or Cliff? They are different and aren't used too much. I love Clint Easton! My grandpa would get a kick out of it!

Trail, Builder, Ledge, Dozer, Tank..awesome big dog names.

Honestly? They sound so much like similar noun names that have since become popular that they really aren't that strange. You're getting a lot of flack for them, but I'm amused at the suggestion that you pick equally random nouns that have since become famous.

Think about some of the popular names I've seen
Porter
River
Ash
Parker
Hunter

They're all just the same. Random words we've decided are acceptable names. And, nevermind all the people who pick names because somewhere along the way they meant X. It's like picking a random noun but more exotic!

Names are what you make them. However, hopefully you can find something that makes both of you happy.

I am completely confused as to why these would start a trend; I think his decision to use random, not close to name nouns, will be safe. I can't even believe these are serious choices.

If he likes Builder, there are other masculine job names out there. Hunter, Porter, Carter, Cooper, Spencer.

If he really needs a noun name, there are some that are more generally accepted as names: August, Christian, Forest, Phoenix, River.

If my name was Trail, Cabel, Ledger, or Builder, I would be mortified. Hope he lets you pick a good middle name, 'cause that's what he's going to go by.
