[identity profile] timed.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I am not expecting to have children anytime soon but I want your opinion anyway since someday my future children will probably have one of the names listed below. I seem to have a really hard time with boy names and I don't know if the names I like classify as "odd" or not, so let me know. (My boyfriend's last name is Poss, so I guess you could put the names with his last name.)

My favorite names for girls:
  • Ellie Christina
  • (Ellie is my all time favorite girl name, but I am not sure "Christina" fits well with it.)
  • Astrid Harper

  • Lilly Bijou

  • Audrey Catherine

  • Frances Mary

  • Isolde Juliet
  • Adair Jolie
  • (Not after Angelina, my mom had told me about the name "Jolie" when I was really young and I have loved it since. I used to spell it "Joelie" though and I am not sure if that is a good way to spell it. Also, I think "Adair" is a boy name but I love it more on a girl.)

My favorite names for boys:
  • Jude (?)

  • Elijah Matthew

  • Oliver (?)

  • Noah Elliott

  • Nolan Francis
  • (Though I think Francis sounds too feminine.)

So... thoughts, opinions, suggestions, criticisms?

I'm Cyndi Frances :)

The oldest girl in each generation (mum's side, obviously) has it as their middle name...

Elisabeth-Cleo Frances
Yvonne Frances
Mary Frances
[and another one whose first name I don't know]

I'm planning on calling my first daughter Imogen Frances.

I really like Astrid Harper!

The only girls name I dont really know about is Bijou. Is it pronounced like BYE-you? or BEE-ziou? I personally am not a big fan of Frances as a first name either. The rest I like.

As far as boy's names go, I like them all except Francis.. but maybe it's just a personal problem with the name Francis=)

Hey, my rabbit's name is Francis. :(
But I call him Frank..even if it does remind me of a hotdog every time I say it.

Frank is the bad name association for me. His real name was Francis, so both are ruined=\ But I bet it's cute on your rabbit=)

Okay. :) I know how a name can be forever ruined by a person.

kind of like "bee-joo" ? but the J is the french sounding one, not like the start of "jump".. more like the S sound in "Asia" (at least in my accent)

:S it's hard to explain pronunciations over the internet, not knowing whether people have the same accent as you

Hi. :)

I like Ellie Christine better than Ellie Christina.

I'd spell Katherine with a K, just a preference. :)

Frances Marie rather than Mary (Mary is my middle name, though).

How do you pronounce Isolde?

Jude Elliot could work.

I'm not too fond of Oliver as a first name...I think it'd make a better middle name, like Francis Oliver. But if you don't like Francis on a male, then don't use it.

Isolde Juliet is a little out there. Romeo and Juliet, Tristan and Isolde? It's like, the most unlucky in love name on the planet. ;)

"Jolie" is ridiculously popular here in Southwest Louisiana. People think they are going to be so clever and honor their Cajun French heritage, and then there's the popularity of the song "Jolie Blonde" driving the name's popularity, too. And then parents try to add accent marks and/or apostrophes to it when it shouldn't have any, or they capitalize the 'l' so that it looks like JoLie or Jo'Lee', and in general I just have bad feelings about this as a name. Shouldn't a name have more substance to it than "Pretty"? I feel the same way about Belle and Beau, not to mention Elle or Ella ("she").

Surprisingly, though, I do love the sound of Ellie.

My comment was a little harsh; I apologize for that. My nit-picky problems with the name stem from something a lot deeper--my big problem with the re-appropriation of a tourism brand of Cajun culture around here. Names like "Jolie" are typical of that epidemic. I guess it's sort of equivalent to a Hawai'ian naming her child Aloha.

Are you pronouncing Jolie with a hard j sound or with a zh sound? I say "Zho-lee," but I wouldn't get that pronunciation from Joelie.

Ellie Christina- i prefer ella, but thats because i think anything with "ee" on the end is kind of like baby talk, and i don't like it.
Astrid Harper- i really like this one! its a very powerful name i think, but still feminine!
Lilly Bijou- i like lilly, but i cant say i like bijou, maybe Lilly Jewel would be better
Audrey Catherine- dont really like, tho it is beautiful
Frances Mary- LOVE frances
Isolde Juliet- love the names, but not together
Adair Jolie- adair is pretty cool, reminds me of Daisy Adair on Dead Like Me

Jude- pretty okay
Elijah Matthew- like elijah but not matthew, probably because i know too many matthews!
Oliver- oliver was my puppy! i dont know how i feel about it on a human tho, lol!
Noah Elliott- i like it! those used to be on my favourite boy name list
Nolan Francis- its okay, but to hear francis outloud, i this is for a girl

im sure my fave on the list is: Astrid Harper
what about Elliott Elijah or Elliott Jude?

Ellie is on my list, too! I love it. I like Ellie Sophia, but I think Christina sounds nice with it, too. Astrid is also on my list (and I'm going crazy seeing it everywhere lately!) I'm not sure about Harper because it's too surname-y for me. Frances Mary is lovely. Isolde Juliet is a little too much.

I like all of your boy names (Nolan and Noah are on my list as well) :) Oh, except Oliver, sorry. Jude is really interesting. I think it would be nice with a longer middle name. Something like Jude Alexander?

I have a secret love affair with the name Isolde! And my future babies' daddy actually likes it too. We can't decide if it is too out there to actually put down on the list or not...

no way! totally put it on your list! it's not too out there, it's unique and feminine without being made up and cutesy!

Ya think? Perhaps I will do a post about it sometime to get more of a consensus. I really do like it though.

You could nn her Issy if you think Isolde is too much for a young child. I love it, by the way!

hm.. well I personally spell it like how the flower is spelt. Just, Lily. It looks more simple to me.. I still like it your name, just seems less simple.

Ellie Christina - I think they sound fine together, but I REALLY don't like Ellie as a fn, I think it's too cutesy and incomplete sounding. I prefer Elisabeth, Melody, Evelyn, Eleanor, Melanie, etc.

Astrid Harper - very pretty! I adore Astrid!

Lilly Bijou - not a fan of Bijou, but Lily (I like one L) is pretty :)

Audrey Catherine - LOVE it!!

Frances Mary - again, LOVE it! I love Frances and Mary. I also like Francesca which I think would be nice with Mary :) Great combo here!

Isolde Juliet - I don't like Isolde. Juliet is gorgeous though.

Adair Jolie - not a huge fan of Adair.

My favorite from your list is definitely Frances Mary or Audrey Catherine.

Jude - nice, I'm really bad at thinking of mn's

Elijah Matthew - love it

Oliver (?) - like

Noah Elliott - not a fan of Noah, but Elliott is really nice

Nolan Francis - Nolan is really nice, very underused. I agree Francis sounds too feminine.

Ellie is too nicknamey. Christina is dated (like Laura or Amy).
I love Astrid. I prefer Harper on a boy.
I like Lily spelled this way. Bijou is silly sounding and a cutesy.
Audrey Catherine is really nice, but not inspiring.
Frances Mary is nice enough, but again, not inspiring.
Isolde Juliet might be too much since both names are after tragic romances in literature. I like them both but seperately.
Adair is all boy to me and people will still think Jolie is after Angelina.

I love Jude.
I never really liked Elijah or Matthew.
I love Oliver.
I like Noah. Never really liked Elliott
Francis definitely doesn't sound femme. Not a fan of Nolan.

Francis (Francie) Nolan is the main charactor of the book A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.

And the name Adair is ringing some sort of bell in my head. I think it may be the last name of a VC Andrews character.

Looking at my comment, I realized that I am entirely too much of a book dork.

i love almost all of them. im not big on audrey, or adair. oliver, astrid, and elijah are some of the names near the top of our list. my advice to you would be to check out the jewish tradition with elijah, as its a super sacred name (my fiance is jewish, and therefore we would probably never use it, although i really love it, it would just be too wierd) but some people care about that, some dont, which is why i suggested taking a look into it, if you care.

ive been tossing around the idea of nolan lately, i think i really really like it.
