What do you think about hyphenated names?

Good way to use two names you like at once?

If anyone here has a hyphenated name can you tell me of any trouble you've had with it? Like when filling out forms, or half your name always getting cut off, etc.

I'm trying to honor three people at a time. Three women: Kaia, Amy, Ellen. Kai-Amy Ellen ?? WDYT? Help?

I don't like hyphenated names. I see nothing wrong with having two middle names, however - Kai Amy Ellen. However, I don't like Kai much and out of those named I prefer Ellen the most... so I would probably use Ellen Amy Kai. And all of them are short names so two middle names doesn't feel extremely long.

The worry for me is that since Kai ends with a vowel and Amy starts with one, it's going to sound like one name, Kaiyami, when pronounced.

I'd go for Amy Ellen Kai, personally.

I have a double last name that isn't hyphenated and from some reason people think that Goldberg is my middle name not part of my last name.

Just remember you don't need to honor everyone. I think a lot of people are getting caught up in honoring people that they end up with names they don't like.

I don't see Kai-Amy working as a first name. Some names are legit double names, like Mary-Anne or Anne-Maree but Kai-Amy just doesn't work and doesn't roll.

I am generally not a fan of hyphenated names OR giving two middle names, but if I had to pick, I would choose giving two middle names rather than hyphenating. Amy Ellen Kai sounds the best IMO.

What about Kammy/Cami/Kami Ellen or Ellen Kammy? I prefer the latter...

I don't like hyphenated names or two middle names, but I had to choose, I'd go with the latter (even though I generally do think it seems like name over-kill). =/

Uh...if it's absolutely necessary to have all three names...I guess Amy Ellen Kai sounds the best.

I don't like hyphenated names at all... you can give someone two middle names and be done with it.

I also are with people that have mentioned Kai-Amy will get turned into Kayammy or something so I'd go with Ellen Amy Kai.

Hyphenated names are kind of a GP of mine. I probably wouldn't use one (not entirely sure why), but I have no problem with them.

I'd go with Amy-Ellen Kaia for your situation (Kaia-Ellen Amy, Ellen-Amy Kaia, or even Kaia-Amy Ellen would all be alright too). You're honoring Kaia, not Kai, and Kai is a boy's name anyway. Plus it doesn't flow at all with Amy.

My mom has a hypenated last name (which is not unusual these days) and she has trouble with companies putting her name in completely wrong so I can only imagine the trouble with a first name. If it's something that's been around for awhlie like Mary-Anne, I think that's fine, but if you are making up the combo, I don't see it working out well.

I don't care too much for hyphenated names. I just don't really see the necessity for them; drop the hyphen and have two middle names sounds easier to me. Plus, when people have hyphenated names, I'm never sure if they expect to use the whole thing all the time or not.

I prefer two first or middle names instead of a hyphenated.

I think sometimes they work, most often they don't. I don't think Kai-Amy works.

Can you combine the names?

Amaia (http://www.behindthename.com/name/amaia) = Amy + Kaia

Miela (http://www.behindthename.com/name/miela) = Amy + Ellen

Kalena = Kaia + Ellen

etc.

Can you honor one or more of these women in a different way? Naming as a godparent, use initials rather than full names to honor, etc?

In any case I think the odd duck is Kaia. Amy Ellen and Ellen Amy both sound lovely. Kaia/Kai is a different naming style which is why it doesn't fit comfortably with the other names.

My grandmother has two first names (Mary Ellen) and she is always ALWAYS called by just the first one when people are meeting her for the first time. It drives her crazy still and she is almost 85.

I'm in Canada, so this may be different in other parts of the world, but my stepson has a hyphenated last name and he has recently had a lot of difficulties with official government forms because he filled them out without the hyphen in his last name and they wouldn't accept the forms because legally his name has a hyphen. He has found it a bit of a headache, but it is not really a life altering thing ...

I don't think I've ever met someone with a hyphenated name...but I've known quiet a few with two first names-

Anne Marie
Lara Jane
Dava Lynn (gah, and she was named after her dad, David)
Sarah Jane
Mary Catherine
