I did have a quick scan back through recent posts, although if I've missed this and it's already been posted I apologise.

Over here in the UK there is a show called The X Factor which is pretty much the same as American Idol - Simon Cowell is one of the judges. Anyway, as with Idol, it's massive, and the final last week saw 19.1 million people tune in to see Joe McElderry named this years winner.

The reason I mention it here is because some of his supporters took it to a whole new level:

I think that's fairly ridiculous. Are they going to change their name back in 2 weeks when this is all over?

Don't you have to go through the court system to change your name, and have a reason for doing it?

I don't think you do here - I had a friend who wanted to legally change her surname (never got round to it) but she said all she had to do was fill out the relevant forms, pay a court admin fee and get it signed up a person of standing in the community. It may have actually been more complicated than that, but she gave the impression it was easy enough - which would explain how stories like this continue to come about.

One of my friends recently changed her legal gender AND name, and from I understand, it was quite easy and with minimal fees involved.

Dumb. But I suppose if it's easy to change it back, why not? In the US I think name changes are a bit more complicated/time consuming.

I find it funny how today's society does this kind of crap... I'd rather people would go around changing their name to 'Save Water' or 'End War' than crap like... 'Vote Joe'... yeah, because that is something *really* important. Humanity is sad.
